Kapsa Named Interim Superintendent: The South Bend Community School Corporation Board of Trustees selected long-time employee James Kapsa as interim superintendent by a 7-0 vote.

Dissenting members Bill Sniadecki and Dawn Jones said the board cannot replace Dr. Robert Zimmerman as superintendent until there’s a buyout agreement on his contract but they approved the choice of Kapsa.

The current Jefferson Intermediate Center principal has 38 years of experience with SBCSC as a teacher, principal, and director of elementary education.

Kapsa plans on assuming his duties as superintendent today.

NBA Finals; Celtics 108, Lakers 102: Trailing Boston by 24 points with less than eight minutes left, the Lakers got within two before losing Sunday night.

Only three teams—Boston in 1969, Portland in 1977, and Miami in 2006—have overcome an 0-2 deficit to win the title. The Lakers haven’t lost since March 28, however.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers’ comeback with 30 points.

Paul Pierce showed no signs of an injured knee as he scored 28 points. Little-used second-year reserve Leon Powe added 21 for the Celtics. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen contributed 17 points each. Garnett grabbed 14 rebounds and Rajon Rondo dished out 16 assists.

Silver Hawks 10, Dragons 3: The visiting Silver Hawks (25-34) were led by Evan Frey and Michael Mee with two hits and three RBIs each.

Third baseman Ramon Ramirez also had two hits. Chance Wheeless had a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Gates Fires Air Force Leaders: Defense Secretary Robert Gates ousted Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne and Chief of Staff General Michael Mosley Thursday.

The firings came in the wake of several embarrassing nuclear mix-ups.

A report concluded that the mistaken shipment of four Air Force electrical fuses for ballistic missile warheads to Taiwan and the mistaken arming of a B-52 bomber with six nuclear-tipped cruise missiles last August showed a ”problem that has been identified but not effectively addressed for over a decade.”

Woman Abducted From Home: A 25-year-old South Bend woman was released unharmed early Wednesday morning after being abducted from her apartment.

The woman told police two masked men forced her into the trunk of her car. The car was left in the 1300 block of White Oak Drive and the woman was able to make her way to the nearby Linebacker Lounge.

Police found the woman’s 9 and 6-year-old children still sleeping at her apartment.

Stanley Cup Finals; Red Wings 3, Penguins 2: The Red Wings survived another wild finish in game six Wednesday to capture their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 seasons.

The Penguins scored in the last minute Monday at Detroit to send the game into overtime (3 OT) and eventually send the series back to Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh nearly erased a two-goal advantage in the last two minutes Wednesday. They scored on a power play with 1:27 left and a last-second shot was just off the mark.

Detroits Henrik Zetterburg won the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Tradition Continues in NBA Finals: The Lakers and Celtics combined have won 30 of the 61 NBA titles.

The Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers dominated the early years of the league with George Mikan. The Bill Russell-led Celtics ruled the 1960s like no other sports franchise in history.

The teams have met 10 times in the championship series; the Celtics lead 8-2. The Lakers won the most recent finals between the two teams in 1985 and ’87.

Candidates Split Primaries; Obama Clinches Nomination: Barack Obama won in Montana and lost in South Dakota Tuesday but he received enough delegates before the Montana polls closed to clinch the Democratic nomination for president.

The Illinois senator becomes the first African-American presidential nominee for a major party.

Obama’s remaining rival, Hillary Clinton, had still not conceded.

Lugnuts 5, Silver Hawks 2: The host Silver Hawks (24-33) lost their third in a row and 10^th in 11 games to the Lugnuts.

The Lugnuts scored four runs off reliever Josh Blake (0-1) in the sixth inning on four hits, a walk, and a wild pitch.

The Hawks scored had taken the lead in the third inning on two runs. Elijah Rumler singled in a run and Evan Frey—who had reached base on a single—came home on a ground out.

Frey and Derrick Walker had two hits each for the Silver Hawks.

Jordan Norberto had pitched well in his five innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, two walks, and striking out seven.

Trainers Say Big Brown’s Hoof Not a Concern: Big Brown’s hoof has held up strong in workouts this week and no blood has been spotted.

Zimmerman Fired: The South Bend Community School Corporation Board of Trustees voted 5-2 to buy out the remaining 16 months of Superintendent Dr. Robert Zimmerman’s contract.

The superintendent—SBCSC’s third in 10 years--is paid $145,000 a year under the contract.

The school corporation attorneys still have to work out the details of the buyout and Dr. Zimmerman has to formally accept it before the trustees can begin the search for a new superintendent.

The vote marks the second time in a decade that the SBCSC board has removed a superintendent. Current Ivy Tech-North Central Chancellor Dr. Virginia Calvin was ousted in 2000 after serving for seven years.

Election 2008

Clinton Wins in Puerto Rico: Hilary Clinton won the weekend Puerto Rico Democratic presidential primary with 68% of the vote to 32% for Barack Obama.

Clinton got 38 pledged delegates with the win and Obama 17. That leaves Obama within 43.5 delegates of the total needed to clinch the nomination heading in to today’s South Dakota and Montana primaries.

Disputed Delegates Get Half-Vote: The Michigan and Florida delegations to the Democratic Presidential Convention have been reinstated but with only a half-vote.

That gives Hilary Clinton 105 pledged delegates from Florida and 69 from Michigan for a total of 87 votes. Obama gets 67 pledged delegates from Florida and 59 from Michigan for a total of 63 votes.

The states had been penalized for moving their primaries to a date earlier than the national party had approved.

Primary Season Ends Today With South Dakota, Montana: There are a total of 31 pledged delegates at stake in the final 2008 presidential primaries today.

Even if Hilary Clinton wins them all, it would still be far short of the number she needs to get the nomination.

Harvey Korman Dies: Long-time “Carol Burnett Show” regular Harvey Korman, 81, died Thursday in UCLA Medical Center after a four-month illness.

Korman, who briefly hosted his own variety show, was also a regular guest star on TV shows and starred in such films as “The Flinstones” (as the voice of Dict-a-bird), “High Anxiety,” “History of the World: Part 1,” and “Blazing Saddles.”
