Election 2008

Giuliani, Edwards Drop Out:
Former Republican front-runner Rudy Giuliani and 2004 Democratic vice-presidential nominee John Edwards dropped out of the races for their party’s nominations Wednesday.
Giuiliani endorsed the new front-runner, Arizona Senator John McCain but ruled out a vice-presidential race for himself.
Edwards praised New York Senator Hilary Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama but refrained from endorsing one of them.
McCain Gets Big “Mo”: John McCain moved ahead in the Republican delegate count with his win in this week’s Florida primary. The 57 delegates from the Sunshine State give him 93 to 59 for Mitt Romney and 40 for Mike Huckabee.
Hilary Still Leads Dems: Hilary Clinton still leads the Democratic delegate count with 261 to 192 for Barack Obama and 66 for ex-candidate John Edwards.
The former First Lady got no delegates for her wins in Florida and Michigan. Both states have been stripped of their delegates by the national Democratic party for moving up the date of their primaries.
Obama still got 30% of the vote in Florida even though he didn’t campaign.

Letter to the Editor: CFH guest the Rev. Francis Githinji’s letter is too long for the newsstand edition—it would take up the entire issue. In it he refers to the six men from South Bend’s Calvary Temple who helped build the Assembly of God Church in Eldoret, Kenya which was burned recently. Forty people, including women and children who had taken refuge, were killed. He also calls on the political leaders of his country, President Mwai Kibaki and chief rival Raila Odinga, to act like statesmen and work together to stop the slaughter of innocents.

Letter to the Editor
The six men of the Calvary Temple Church in South Bend (South Bend Tribune, Tuesday, January 15, 2008) have a reason to be haunted by the burning of the church in Kenya. It might seem as though the effort they made in the building of the Assemblies of God Church in Eldoret has been in vain but the seed that they planted was like a tender branch that never cease. When a tree has been cut down, there is always hope for the tender branch to sprout again and have roots. The testimony in the Tribune that "when they got there they worked like dogs" is never in vain! It is well fitting of true servants of God who must allow their Master to put a "dog-collar" around their necks and lead them by a chain wherever He wills.

No doubt, "the people had gone to the church for refuge and were praying inside when the flames engulfed the church." How painful! How sad! The church is "the House of God, a place of refuge for all nations" and must be held in reverence for it's sacredness. Whosoever runs into the church for refuge falls under the shadow of the Most High and is the guest of the Almighty. He must remain under this divine protection and no one has the power or authority to pursue or eject him from this holy ground that is common to all. I am sure that the international law has regard for this divine law.

The burning of the church with so many people with very innocent children among them must not only be treated as sacrilegious but must also be condemned by the international community as a beastly act and a violation of right to life. It is the highest time that Human Rights activists prove their worth by demanding that the Kenya Government and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) hierarchy both accept responsibility and account for all the post-election atrocity. The perpetrators who torched the church causing so many deaths must also be hunted down and brought to book. As I sympathize with my six brothers in South Bend, I deeply grieve the devastating situation caused by political madness in my country. This is as a result of individual ambitions and greed for power rather than tribal ethnicity. In an earlier article in the Tribune, Gwynne Dyer, the London-based independent journalist rightly said that "Kenya is not an ethnic timberbox where people automatically back their own tribe and hate everyone else." Would the leaders want to show patriotism to their country and solidarity with the people who elected them, they must give up their pride and borrow the wise words of one of the former vice-president of Kenya. After being subjected to shameful humiliation in a public arena by his boss, he declared in resignation that "there comes a time when the nation is more important than an individual." An individual's will to offer themselve as a sacrifice for a nation is a will towards a greator good. The Nation of Kenya is more important than President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga and allowing them to continue in their rigidity is sacrificing a whole nation for an individual person.

The fact is that when Kenya was under the British colonial governance, all the tribes co-existed in hamony without the madness that has been experienced since the country became a multipaty state in 1992. The lush central Rift Valley Province, commonly known as the "white highlands" was the bee-hive of the influential white settler community who virtually ruled colonial Kenya from Nakuru. In his memoirs: A Love - Affair with - Sunshine, Sir Michael Blundell - himself a settler at Solai in Nakuru - reckons that no governor would make a decision without having to travel to Nakuru to consult the settlers. "They were the tail that wagged the dog," he writes. Pioneer settlers such as the Lord Delamere set camp in this significant, hilly and most agriculturally productive province in the early 1930s. This was almost the same time that my parents migrated here from Gikuyuland in search of employment. Kenyatta, therefore, had nothing to do with the settlement of every Kikuyu in the Rift Valley. I and many others from different tribes not originally from the province were born there before the country acquired it's independence. We grew up together from early childhood, went to school, to church, hunted together and eat together. This was without acrimony and tribalism was an animal unknown to us at the time. Otherwise, we would have hunted it then instead of taking bows and arrows now to hunt, to maim and to kill the same people with whom we shared life with from such an early age.

In his ramblings in the Homeless Herald, Wednesday, January 9, 2008, Uncle Ron said that I am not concerned with politics. This is partly true. My prayer right now is that peace be urgently restored back in Kenya that we may all earnestly endeavour towards becoming one people, one nation, one country, one love, world over.

Letter to the Editor: Today, January 25 , is the Feast Day of the Conversion of St. Paul. It is the day that I commemorate my investiture as a Franciscan.
The Catholic bishops in Kenya have declared today as a national day of prayer and have requested Christians world-wide to join together in praying for the situation in Kenya. They have posted the prayer below on the website for all to pray.
The Rev. Francis Githinji

Prayer for Peace and Reconciliation

Oh God, our creator and giver of life, you sent your Son, the Prince of Peace, to redeem us and teach us the way of love. Listen to the supplications of your suffering children of Kenya in this difficult moment of our dear country. Hear the cries of the many people afflilcted through the death of their loved ones or the loss of property. Hear the sighs of those who fear for their lives, or have been displaced and are facing hunger and scarcity.

Through the power of your grace, we ask you, Lord, to drive out from our midst any form of hatred with your healing love. Bring about justice through the way of charity. Where there is bitterness, teach us forgiveness and reconciliation. Put in our hearts the love for truth, so that your justice can prevail. Above all, Father, touch the hearts of our political leaders so that they may humbly seek a disinterested dialogue that will bring about understanding.

May you bless our land once more with lasting peace and fraternal understanding, where in your love, we will live in unity, peace and liberty as brothers and sisters. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

is back at CFH. Why is that newsworthy? Frankly, it is a slow people news day but “American Idol” is back in the news and Gregg is the last winner of “Center Idol”. He obviously set the bar impossibly high.
Actually a very reliable source told me that some consideration has been given to reviving “Center Idol”. Of course Gregg would be an overwhelming favorite but there’s always the possibility of an upset. Look what happened to the Colts and Cowboys.

Uncle Ron’s Sports Ramblings

Jason Garrett Stays at Ranch:
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has decided to stay on with the Dallas Cowboys after interviewing for two vacant head coaching jobs. Everyone will pretend to make nice but it’s fairly common knowledge that Garrett is the Sword of Damocles hanging over head coach Wade Phillips’ head.
There was no word whether Cowboy boss Jerry Jones would try to use his influence to break up the budding relationship between quarterback Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson. Many people blame Jessie and not Tony for the Cowboys’ upset playoff loss. That’s puzzling since Jess didn’t throw any passes (she undoubtedly was the recipient of a few), didn’t run any offensive plays; she didn’t even hold for field goals (more out of fear of helmet head rather than being piled on although the latter had to be a consideration).
As Super Bowl winner and ladies’ man Tom Brady said in defense of Romo, “If they caught the ball in the end zone at the end, nobody makes any mention (of Tony and Jessica’s Mexico trip). You alleviate a lot of criticism by winning.”
Someday Tony will lead Dallas to a playoff win, maybe even a Super Bowl championship with or without Jessica at his side although Roy Rogers will always remain King of the Cowboys and Dale Evans Queen of the West (sorry, Jessie).

Meanwhile Back at the Ranch:
It should not be assumed (we saw what happens when we assume back in “People in the News”) that Roy and Dale’s (Rogers) life together was a bed of roses (or bluebonnets since Dale was from Texas) in their 50-plus years of marriage.
For instance Dale was very upset when Roy had the original Trigger (there were several generations), Buttermilk, and Bullet the Wonder Dog stuffed for display in the family museum. Buttermilk, after all, was Dale’s horse. She threatened to have Roy stuffed and mounted on Trigger. Roy said that was fine as long as he was smiling. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) when the sad time came to make Roy’s final arrangements it was discovered that human taxidermy is illegal.
There was also the melee at the Rogers Ranch that threatened to bring the house down. Dale sought out Dad for backup only to discover that Roy was right in the middle of the ruckus, so she did the only thing she could do. She grabbed her snubnose .38 revolver. Fortunately a warning shot sufficed to show everyone that Dale meant business. (Nowadays if you fired a warning shot to get your kids’ attention it would probably be considered child abuse.).
Tiller Exiled to His Ranch (see how that segues): Meanwhile back at Boilermaker Country Head football coach Joe Tiller is being exiled to his ranch after next season. His successor, former assistant Danny Hope, is already on board. Hope was the head coach at Eastern Kentucky last season.
Tiller did restore Purdue’s reputation as a mecca for future NFL quarterbacks. Two of his former students, Kyle Orton of the Chicago Bears and Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints started for their opposing teams in the final game of the season recently. Orton’s Bears came out on top.
Senior Curtis Painter broke a Boilermaker single-game record held jointly by Orton and Brees in Purdue’s 51-48 Motor City Bowl victory over Central Michigan.
Painter appears to be a good prospect to carry on a Purdue NFL QB tradition that includes Brees; Orton; Dale Samuels, who played for the Chicago Cardinals; Len Dawson, who won AFL and Super Bowl Championships with the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs (same franchise); Bob Griese of the 17-0 Super Bowl Champion Miami Dolphins; Mike Phipps, who was unbeaten in three tries against Notre Dame before leading the Bears to the playoffs; Gary Danielson; Mark Herrman; Scott Campbell; and Jim Everett
Bob DeMoss, the first of the great Boilermaker QBs didn’t have a long NFL career but he tutored some of those future pros in a 22-year coaching stint at his Alma Mater.

Uncle Ron’s Sports Ramblings

Eventually We’ll Get Back to Sports:
I know what Jessica Simpson fans are going to say (you have to read yesterday’s column to know what I’m talking about): Tony Romo has already found himself a nice Texas girl. Besides, if Jessica is a bimbo (and I’m not saying she is) then what is Tony: a bimbo-monger or a bimbomeister?
It’s true that Jessica has chosen Dolly Parton rather than fellow Texan Dale Evans as a role model. Dolly is the granddaughter of a preacher and Jessica is the daughter of one. Jessica actually intended to pursue a music ministry but was told she was too “hot” to sing gospel.
One difference between Jessica and Dolly is that Dolly got lucky the first time when it came to marriage. She and husband Carl Dean have been married for more than 40 years.
Of course you might remember (its been a few years) that it took Dale more than one try at marriage before she found her King of the Cowboys and became Queen of the West.
Tony will have to win at least one playoff game before they even think about crowning him King of the Cowboys. Besides Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman won Super Bowl and they weren’t crowned King of the Cowboys. Of course Roy (Rogers) was still alive then. Besides if the crown had been available Jerry Jones would have grabbed it.
I suppose the only appropriate way to end this would be to wish everybody happy trails until we meet again and, as always, keep smiling until then.

Can We (or Should We) Ignore the Bimbo Factor:
With both the Cowboys and Colts losing Sunday the moral lesson is inconclusive.
If Indianapolis had won, folks in the Dallas area would have suggested that Tony Romo find a nice Texas girl and settle down like Peyton Manning. Maybe there are still some of Dale Evans’ grandchildren or grand-nieces in the Lone Star State—assuming they didn’t break the mold when they made Dale.
If Dallas had won, fans in Indianapolis would have suggested that Peyton Manning find himself a bimbo. That’s assuming he doesn’t have one; being married he can’t flaunt his bimbo (s) like the single Romo.
Then we have Tom Brady who left his pregnant girlfriend for another model. The media seems to be focusing more on the fact that the Michigan graduate is breaking Manning’s single-season passing records and his Patriots are two wins away from becoming the second team to win the Super Bowl with a perfect record.
In case anyone is interested in football, the Sunday forecast calls for a high of 4 degrees in Green Bay where the Packers host the Giants. Highs in the 20 are predicted for the Patriots-Chargers game in Foxboro. The long-range forecast calls for Summer, but right now that’s just a rumor.

Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Michigan Voters Seek Relevancy:
In case you hadn’t heard, presidential candidates are boycotting the Michigan presidential primary.
That’s because Michigan party leaders had the effrontery to believe that voters from one of the largest states (number 8; 10,095,643) in the Union should have as much say in the nominating process as those from two of the smallest: New Hampshire (41; 1,3124,895) and Iowa (30, 2,932,085). They acted on that belief by moving up their primary to January 15.
Hilary Clinton is the only candidate on the Democratic ballot. Illinois Senator Barack Obama, the Iowa winner; former North Carolina Senator and vice-presidential nominee John Edwards; and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson have withdrawn their names from the ballot and pledged not to campaign in the state.
A Edwards supporter, Martha Hayes of Grand Rapids, sued to try and stop the election results from being used. A federal judge ruled against her Monday.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, the Iowa winner; Arizona Senator John McCain, the New Hampshire winner; and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are campaigning in the Wolverine state. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani is running TV ads in portions of the state.
McCain won the 2000 Michigan Republican Primary. Romney is the son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney.
Guiliani, former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson, and U.S. Representative Ron Paul of Texas are concentrating their resources on the February 5 “Super Tuesday” primaries. Twenty-four states, representing 40% of the available delegates, will cast their votes on that date.
There doesn’t appear to be any danger of Indiana party leaders making Hoosier votes relevant at the national level. Our state’s primary remains on May 6.

Local Residents Affected by Kenyan Crisis:
An estimated 500 people have been killed in protests in the wake of the recent Kenyan presidential election.
The Rev. Francis Githinji, a CFH guest and native of Nairobi, Kenya, is keeping a close watch on the happenings in his country, which had been considered one of the most successful democracies in Africa..
According to Father Francis’ brother, residents of Nairobi are sleeping in the woods for fear of having their homes burned down around them.
In the worst incident, men of the Kalenjin tribe blocked the entrances of an Assembly of God in Eldoret and set fire to it while female tribe members reportedly cheered them on. Women and children from Father Francis’ Kikuyu tribe had taken refuge in the church.
According to Kenyan news sources, the Kalenjins had supported defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement even though he is a member of the Luo tribe.
Incumbent President Mwai Kibaki of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) was declared the winner of the election and sworn in for a second term. The approximately 200,000-vote margin was the smallest in Kenya’s 45-year history.
Odinga has claimed that the victory is fraudulent and that he will not meet face-to-face with Kibaki until the latter admits it was.
Observers from the United States, Great Britain, and the United Nations have agreed that there were irregularities in the voting.
John Kufuor, president of Ghana and African Union Chief, met separately with Kibaki and Odinga yesterday to try and reach a solution to the crisis.
Kibaki is also from the Kikuyu tribe but Father Francis said that he is not concerned with politics. He only wants to see peace restored to his homeland.

BCS Championship; (2) LSU 38, (1) Ohio St. 24:
Matt Flynn threw four touchdown passes as the Tigers (12-2) won their second BCS title in five years.
Chris “Beanie” Wells had twenty carries for 146 yards for the Buckeyes (11-2), including a 65-yard burst for the game’s first score. It was the second year in a row that Ohio State had come in to the championship game with the top ranking and lost to a SEC team.
LSU scored 31 straight points after falling behind 10-0. The Buckeyes scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, including one in the last minute, to make the score a little more respectable.
Motor City Bowl; Purdue 51, Central Michigan 48: Chris Summers kicked a 48-yard field goal as time expired for the victorious Boilermakers (9-5).
The 99 points was the second-highest bowl total; California beat Virginia Tech 52-49 in the 2003 Insight Bowl.
Purdue’s Curtis Painter threw for 546 yards and four touchdowns. He broke the Boilermaker single-game record held by current NFL quarterbacks Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints) and Kyle Orton (Chicago Bears).
CMU’s (8-6) Dan LeFevour passed for four touchdowns and ran for two more. His 19-yard toss with 1:09 left tied the game at 48.
Painter was 4-5 on the winning drive.
CMU head coach Butch Jones interviewed for the vacant position at West Virginia but that school decided to promote assistant and interim coach Bill Stewart. Jones wound up signing a three-year extension. Jones and Stewart were both assistants to new Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez at WVU.
Insight Bowl; Oklahoma State 49, IU 33: Zac Robinson passed for 302 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more TDS for Oklahoma State (7-6).

International Bowl; Rutgers 52, Ball St. 30: Junior Ray Rice gained 280 yards, including a 90-yard scamper, for the Scarlet Knights (8-5).
