Election 2008

Obama Gains Majority: Barack Obama won the Oregon primary Tuesday and earned a guaranteed majority of pledged delegates for the Democratic Party convention.

Obama was leading Hillary Clinton in Oregon 58%-42% this morning with 88% of the precincts reporting. Oregon has 52 pledged delegates and 13 superdelegates. The superdelegates are not obligated to support the candidate that won the popular vote in their state.

Clinton won in Kentucky (51 pledged delegates and nine superdelegates) 65%-30%. She also won an overwhelming victory in neighboring West Virginia last Tuesday. Both have been key states to winning the presidency. No Democrat has taken the White House since John F. Kennedy in 1960 without winning Kentucky.

Obama needs 73 delegates to reach the 2,026 needed to secure the nomination. He is gaining support from superdelegates every day.

There are three primaries left: Puerto Rico (June 1, 55 delegates and eight superdelegates), Montana (June 3, 16 delegates and nine superdelegates) and South Dakota (June 3, 15 delegates and eight superdelegates).

The national Democratic Party also has to resolve the issue of what to do with the delegates from Michigan and Florida. Those two states—with a total of 313 delegates and 55 superdelegates—were penalized for moving their primaries to January.

The Irish face West Virginia Wednesday in the losers’ bracket.

Whitecaps 10, Silver Hawks 4: West Michigan scored six runs in the eighth inning off Josh Blake and Jeff Dietz at Coveleski Stadium Tuesday.

Blake failed to get a batter out.

The Hawks (19-24) scored three runs in the seventh inning to close the gap before the Whitecap’s eighth inning explosion. Sean Coughlin, Chance Wheeless, and Derrick Walker scored on walks. The Hawks added another run in the ninth on an RBI single by Ariel Urena.

Piazza Retires: Mike Piazza, a 12-time MLB All-Star, officially retired after 16 seasons with the Dodgers, Marlins, Mets, Padres and Athletics.

Piazza, 39, hit .275 with eight homers and 44 RBIs last season as a designated hitter with the A’s. His 396 homers as a catcher put him first on the all-time list ahead of Carlton Fisk (351), Johnny Bench (327), and Yogi Berra (306).

Bulls Get Top Pick: The Chicago Bulls got the top pick in the 2008 NBA draft lottery.

The top two players are Michael Beasley of Kansas State and Derrick Rose of Memphis. IU’s Eric Gordon is also available.

Falcons Sign QB Matt Ryan: The Atlanta Falcons signed quarterback Matt Ryan of Boston College—the number three pick in the 2008 NFL draft—to a six-year, $72-million contract.

Indy to Host 2012 Super Bowl: Indianapolis will host the 2012 Super Bowl. The city’s new Lucas Oil Stadium with its retractable roof will open this season.

Teddy Has Brain Cancer: Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Kennedy--the second-longest serving living senator—has been in the hospital since suffering a seizure this weekend.

The senator’s tumor is a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe, the section of the brain that controls various sensory activity, including the ability to speak and motor function.

Democratic Presidential Race 2008: Is It Over?—If all of John Edwards’ delegates throw their support behind Barack Obama’s candidacy, that still doesn’t mean the race for the Democratic presidential nomination is over.

Edwards accumulated 19 delegates during his run for the nomination. That wouldn’t be enough to put Obama over; the delegates are not obligated to support Obama just because Edwards has endorsed the Democratic frontrunner.

Obama could win enough pledged delegates today in Kentucky and Oregon to ensure himself a majority in the Democratic convention. He has 1,606 which is 21 short of a majority of the 3,253 available pledged delegates.

Kentucky has 51 pledged (and nine superdelegates); Oregon has 52 pledged delegates (and 13 superdelegates).

Hillary Clinton is favored to win decisively in Kentucky, just like she did in neighboring West Virginia last week. Obama is favored in Oregon.

A quarter of the 800 superdelegates have not declared support for either candidate. Obama picked up six more superdelegates this week. Clinton added none.

West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, the longest-serving senator in history and a former Ku Klux Klan member who opposed civil rights legislation, has endorsed Obama despite Clinton’s landslide win in his state.

If Hillary does see the handwriting on the wall, will she follow the example of the Honorable David Crockett of Tennessee who—in one of the more memorable concession speeches--reportedly told his former constituents, “You all can go to Hell; I’m going to Texas.”

Hillary probably won’t burn her bridges that completely. There’ll be other elections.

Silver Hawks 4, Whitecaps 1: Sean Coughlin and Chance Wheeless homered to provide all the offense Bryan Augenstein (2-1) needed.

Coughlin has his six homers and batted .352 since joining the Hawks (19-23). He hit a 2-run blast with two outs in the first inning to stake Augenstein to an early lead.

Wheeless hit a solo shot in the fourth inning.

Augenstein went eight innings, allowed four hits, gave up one earned run, walked one and struck out three. Evan Scribner pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Prosecutors File Charges In Fatal Shooting: Prosecutors filed murder and carjacking charges against Darnell Perry and Jerry Young in connection with this weekend’s early-morning shooting death of Landris McFadden.

McFadden was shot during a gun battle on Ireland Road. He died a short time after being dropped off at the South Bend Police station on Sample Street.

Prosecutors also filed conspiracy to commit carjacking charges against DeMarco Washington. Police are still looking for Washington.

Daniel Receives Probation: WSBT-TV news anchor Debra Daniel was placed on 12-months probation today after she pled guilty to driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

The station announced that Daniel will be back on the air tonight.

Man Charged In Death of Security Guard: Joshua M. Kati, 27, has been charged with aggravated battery and reckless homicide in the death of a 63-year old security guard.

Prosecutors allege that James E. Muddiman, Sr., was working as a security guard at South Bank Bar on Lincolnway East when he was struck on the right side of his head by Kati. According to witnesses, Muddiman fell and banaged his head on the concrete floor.

Kasey Kahne Wins All-Star Race: Kasey Kahne became the first driver to be voted in by the fans and win the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Saturday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Kahne gambled on his last pit stop to edge Greg Biffle. Kyle Busch; Dale Earnhardt, Jr.; and Busch had dominated the race.

South Bend’s Ryan Newman finished sixth.

No Sprint Cup points are awarded for the All-Star race.

Ochoa Keeps On Winning: Lorena Ochoa won her sixth title in nine events this year by taking the Sybase Classic in New Jersey this weekend.

Ochoa shot a 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory over five other golfers.

Lazier, Roth Get Last Two Indy Spots: Buddy Lazier, the 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner, was bumped from the starting 33 by Marty Roth, but managed to get back in.

Rookie Mario Dominguez knocked Roger Yasukawa out of the race but crashed on his last run around the track. That left Lazier (32) and Roth (33) in the last two positions.

The starting field will again include three women: Danica Patrick (5)—who recently got her first IRL win, veteran Sarah Fisher (22) and Milka Duno of Brazil (27).

Coverage of the race by ABC will begin at noon Sunday.

Gun Battle Turns Deadly On Ireland Road: A running gun battle on Ireland Road left one man, 22-year-old Landris McFadden, dead Saturday.

The battle, which involved the occupants of two cars, started at York and Ireland Streets and proceeded west at 1 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities are not releasing the names of the two suspects arrested.

China Mourns Dead From Earthquake: China ground to a halt for three minutes today as cars, trains and ships sounded their horns in a “wail of grief” to mourn the dead from last week’s earthquake that may have claimed more than 72,000 lives.

The national death toll rose to 34,073 people with 245,108 injured, the State Council said today. In Sichuan province, the worst affected, more than 9,500 people are still buried in collapsed buildings and 29,418 other people are missing, state-run Xinhua News Agency said earlier.

China’s weather agency forecast heavy rain starting tomorrow in the quake zone as workers sought to shore up dams in the area. Some 10,000 people were evacuated to Mianyang city three days ago from an area of Beichuan after cracks appeared in a nearby dam.

Nearly 160 relief workers were killed or injured in mudslides caused by rain and aftershocks.

New Executive Chef On Job: New CFH Executive Chef Troy McKee is on the job.

The Herald will try to assign a top-notch reporter to interview him, but first we have to find one.

The Herald could get neither confirmation nor denial of the rumor that the CFH dining room will be renamed “Chez Homelet” (rhymes with Chevrolet).

Herald Endorses Former Mayor of Carmel: It may be too late for a write-in vote, but the Herald is endorsing former Mayor of Carmel, CA. Clint Eastwood for president. The former mayor doesn’t need to bother with press conferences or speeches because people know where he stands.

▪Q: “Mayor Eastwood, as president what would you tell your counterpart in the event of a missile crisis?”

▪A: “You’d look awfully funny with that missile shoved up your _ _ _.”

▪Q: “Mayor Eastwood, what do you have to say about your opponent?”

South Florida Baseball 5, ND 4: Host South Florida got three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the final two coming on an error from junior Jeremy Barnes, to take the opener of their three-game Big East series.

The loss wasted an outstanding effort by starter David Phelps, who allowed just one earned in eight innings while striking out seven and walking one.

Evan Sharpley hit his 12 home run of the year in the fifth inning with a runner on board.

The Irish (33-17-1, 16-8) return to action tonight against the Bulls. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Silver Hawks 5, Loons 3: Relievers Bryan Henry and Evan Scribner (third save) pitched three perfect innings to preserve the victory for visiting South Bend (16-21).

Henry took over for starter Jarrod Parker (W, 4-1) in the seventh inning. Scribner came on in the ninth to pick up the save.

The Hawks scored the winning runs in the sixth inning. First baseman Chance Wheeless led off with a home run—his second run of the game. Aaron Hanke followed with a single, stole second base, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Evan Frey.

The Hawks won the last three games of the series after losing the opener.

South Bend travels to Ft. Wayne for a four-game series, including a doubleheader tonight. The first game starts at 5 p.m. They return to the Cove Monday to face West Michigan.

Strong Aftershock Causes More Damages in China: A 5.9 aftershock in China’s Lixian County today triggered landslides that cut off roads and buried vehicles.

Rescue workers were already trying to deal with the damage from the 7.9-magnitude quake that hit China earlier this week.

Foreign rescue teams are arriving in China to assist the 130,000 troops deployed in the affected areas. The death toll is expected to rise to as many as 50,000 people.

California Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage: California’s Supreme Court has ruled that the state constitution gives gays the right to marry.

The Court made the ruling by a 4-3 count Thursday.

Polizzotto Name Added to Police Memorial: South Bend Police Corporal Nick Polizzotto’s name has been added to the national memorial in Washington more than one year after his shooting death.

Polizzotto’s name was among the more than 350 added to the wall Tuesday night; his family was joined by dozens of members of the South Bend Police Department who served as honor guards.

Thee are now 18,274 names etched into the monument.

Election 2008

Obama Visits Michigan; Joined by Edwards: Former Democratic presidential candidate and vice-presidential nominee John Edwards campaigned with Barack Obama in Michigan and announced his support of the Illinois senator.

The two appeared together at a rally in Michigan.

Silver Hawks 5, Loons 1: Centerfielder Evan Frey improved his batting average to .368 with three hits, one RBI, and one run scored for the Hawks (15-21).

Hawk starter Bryan Augenstein (1-1, 2.70) pitched 7.2 innings, giving up five hits, one earned run, one walk, and striking out six.

South Bend scored three runs in the first inning. Frey led off the game with a single, followed by a Matthew Oxendine double. Michael Mee singled in Frey. Oxendine scored on a sacrifice fly by Sean Coughlin and Mee came home on a single by Derrick Walker.

The Hawks added runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

Henin Retires: Tennis star Justin Henin has announced her retirement from competitive tennis effective immediately.

The 25-year-old Belgian won seven Grand Slam singles titles and was ranked number one for more than 100 weeks.

Myanmar Death Toll Could Reach 120,000: Revised U.N. estimates indicated 2.5-million people were severely affected by the cyclone in Myanmar (Burma) and the Red Cross says the death toll may top 120,000.

Aid, including that brought by U.S. planes, has begun to flow in but various agencies say it is not enough to cope with the enormity of the situation.

Several heads of relief organizations in Myanmar also say some of the international aid is being stolen, diverted, or warehoused by the country’s military rulers.

China Quake Toll Could Reach 50,000; Dams Could be Problem: China’s state TV said today that the death toll from this week’s 7.9-magnitude earthquake could reach 50,000.

The state-run Xinhua news agency has reported death tolls for eight communities in Sichuan provice alone that add up to nearly 20,000, including roughly 7k,700 who perished in the town of Yingxiu, near the quake’s epicenter.

The waters have been lowered at the Zipingpu Dam, near Dujiangyan City, after “severe cracks’ were discovered; 2,000 troops have also been sent to the dam.

Chinese engineers are also checking 400 small dams which might have sustained damage.
