Eight Area Shootings in 13 Days: Police have arrested Markeese Dotson, 18, and Robert Coleman, 21, in connection with the shootings of two people Monday at Laurel Woods Apart-ments in Clay Township.

The shootings were the seventh and eighth in the last 13 days in the South Bend area. One of the victims was an 11-year-old boy hit by a stray bullet while playing video games in his home.

Officials Break Ground on American Bank Project: City officials broke ground this week on the American Trust Place Rehabilitation Project at the northwest corner of Michigan and Washington Streets. The site was also the location of South Bend’s first post office.

The project will include office/retail space and condos.

The Write Stuff: Are you the only person who can read your handwriting? Come join us on Tuesday afternoons from 2-3 p.m. to learn writing that will look great on job applications, love letters, and everything else. Class starts May 6. Sign up in ABE.

Dead Poets Society: Thursdays, 3-4 p.m., ABE Room. All are welcome.

We will discuss short stories and poems.

Silver Hawks 13, Loons 2: The host Silver Hawks (30-34) scored nine runs in the sixth inning Tuesday night on the way to their sixth win in a row.

Five Hawks had two multiple hits, runs or RBIs: Evan Frey, two hits and two runs; Elijah Rumler, two hits and two runs; Sean Coughlin, two runs and two RBIs; Derrick Walker, two hits and two RBIs; Taylor Harbin, two RBIs and three runs; Konrad Schmidt, two hits and two RBIs.

Hawk starter Bryan Augenstein (5-1, 2.16) gave up six hits and one earned run and struck out four.

Strahan Retires: Michael Strahan retired this week after 15 years, a Super Bowl championship, and 216 games—all as a New York Giant.

The Texas Southern graduate finished with 141 ½ career sacks—fifth on the all-time list. His 22 ½ sacks in 2001 is a single-season record.

Bulls Hire Del Negro: Vinny Del Negro has accepted the Chicago Bulls head coaching job. He will take over a team that went from 49 wins to 49 losses in one season.

Bulls’ general manager John Paxson plans to introduce Del Negro as the team’s new coach at a press conference this afternoon.

Del Negro, most recently the Phoenix Suns’ assistant general manager, has had no head coaching experience. A North Carolina State graduate, he averaged 9.1 points in 11 seasons for Sacramento, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Golden State and Phoenix. He also played in Italy.

The Bulls have the number one pick in this month’s NBA draft.

Tiger Looking Strong: Tiger Woods showed no ill effects of his recent knee surgery during practice at Torrey Pines for Thursday’s start of the U.S. Open.

Woods, who won a world juniors championship on the Pacific Coast course when he was 15, has won six Buick Invitational titles at Torrey Pines including the last four, winning in January by eight strokes.

Woods has bounced back from injury before. He came back from surgery on the same knee at the end of 2002 to win at Torrey Pines.
