Uncle Ron’s Ramblings
Ronnie (Santo) Was Number Two; Treated Like Number Two:
Those who say Ron Santo does not have the numbers to get in to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame are ignorant; I don’t know what numbers they are talking about.
We don’t need to be concerned about the exact numbers though; the only number we need to be concerned with is number two. That’s where Santo ranked among all third basemen--including those already in the Hall of Fame--when he ended his MLB career.
Number two is also what he has been treated like by Hall of Fame voters since then.
Santo was the second third baseman to hit over 300 home runs and collect over 2,000 hits--Eddie Matthews was the first.
Brooks Robinson, the only (official) Hall of Fame third baseman from the 1960’s-70’s, didn’t hit 300 home runs. He had more total hits than Santo but it took him 800 more at-bats to do so. Santo still leads Robinson in more than half the statistical categories.
Hall of Fame votes also mentioned intangibles when they elected Bill Mazerowski to the Hall. Santo also had those. He led the National League in clutch hitting for two years in a row; someone actually devised a formula to calculate the best clutch hitters in baseball although they only used it for those two years in the 1960‘s.
If the President-elect from Illinois wants to get government involved in the shortcomings of sports, maybe he needs to address this issue.
Question: If Jason Marquis is worth $9.875-million, what would Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, or Sandy Koufax be worth today?
