Announcements

Michigan Sweep: In lieu of a Monday night meeting this week there will be a “Michigan Sweep” Thursday at 3:30 p.m. All CFH guests should plan to attend. There will be a Monday night meeting August 24.
Do Not Forsake This: “Man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.” See Coop (Gary Cooper) do what he’s gotta do in the classic film “High Noon” August 22 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room.
The cast includes Coop, Grace Kelly, Harry Morgan, and Lloyd Bridges with Tex Ritter (father of actor John Ritter) singing the famous theme song. Lee Van Cleef is a member of Frank Miller’s gang, just to show you what Coop is up against..
There will be a presentation before the screening about the documentary film genre and an open discussion about the film following the screening.
Qi-Gong: Mondays, 1-2 p.m., in the Community Room. All are welcome.
New CFH Exercise Room Hours: Monday and Wednesday, 1-3 p.m.; Monday-Friday, 6-8 p.m. (women 6-7 p.m., men 7-8 p.m.).
Water Park Open: The children’s courtyard is open again but the water park east of CFH is still a cool alternative during these dog days of Summer.
Go east on Sample Street to Fellows Street by the Boys and Girls Club. Turn south. The park is on the south side of the YWCA. The water park is on the east side of the park.
Just a few notes concerning the Children’s Courtyard/AKA Our Back Yard: 1) Families should refer to their copy of the playground rules in order to make sure they are always in compliance; 2) Absolutely NO SMOKING in this yard! We have been finding evidence of smoking and it will not be tolerated!; 3) Always clean up your messes. Put toys away and pick up trash; 4) New Back Yard hours begin September 1. Children may gain access at 4 p.m.
Silver Hawks Tickets: All ticket requests must go through the Development Department. In addition, the Silver Hawks are unable to ac-commodate requests on short notice. If a guest is interested in attending a game please contact Jacqueline Kronk.
Correction: Guests wanting Silver Hawks tickets should first contact their respective coaches who will then contact the Development Department.
Voter Registration: There will be someone on hand to register voters Mondays at 6 p.m., either in the men’s lounge or the Community Room.

▪Positive Life Skills Class: Wednesdays, 9-11:30 a.m. PLS is a walk-in self-empowerment program for Starting Over graduates and new guests. It is open to anyone (even staff). Receive a new key chain when you have attended all eight sessions.
▪ABE Incentives: Students will be given a card to be initialed during each walk-in class attended. Once a student has attended 10 walk-in programs, cards can be redeemed for prizes.
▪Math Study Sessions: Mondays, 3-4 p.m., and Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m., SOSH room.
▪GED Essay Writing Class: Are you working on your GED? Do you need to write an essay or refine your writing skills? Then join us for the Essay Class, Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m.
▪Submit Your Poem: If you like to write poetry in your free time, this is your chance to be a published author! Submit a poem to any staff member in the ABE room and it may be published in the next ABE Newsletter. Also, we will hopefully start another Poetry Jam in the Fall; let us know if you are interested
▪Learn Better Handwriting: Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m., beginning August 5. Sign up in ABE.
▪Writing: Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m., ABE. Improve your basic writing skills under the guidance of a trained instructor.
▪Creative Writing: In recess.
▪Book Club: Inspirational—Monday and/or Thursday, 7-8 p.m.
Regular--will be meeting Monday and/or Thursday, 8-8:30 p.m. Read books of choosing (approved by ABE staff).
Sign up in ABE or on the ABE bulletin board by the men’s lounge.
▪Masterpiece and DCP: Masterpiece and DCP classes will be starting soon. Watch for signs.

Wizards 8, Lugnuts 1: The Silver Hawks were idle but they got a boost from their fellow Hoosier team. The Hawks (36-22) now lead the Dragons and Lugnuts by four games each.
The Silver Hawks (36-22) lead the Lansing Lugnuts by 3 ½ games and the Dayton Dragons by four. Their magic qualifying number is five.
The Silver Hawks travel to Great Lakes tonight to begin an eight-game road trip.

Junior Ties Sammy: White Sox designated hitter Ken Griffey, Jr., tied former Cub slugger Sammy Sosa at fifth place on the all-time homer list with a 2-run shot in the second inning last night.
Junior’s 609th broke a 49 at-bat homerless streak.
Joe Gibbs Racing Penalized: Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano have each been stripped of 150 Sprint Cup points for cheating.
Gibbs crew chiefs Jason Ratcliff and Dave Rogers have been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR.
The action was taken after magnets were found under the gas pedals of Stewart and Logano’s cars.
Kerry-Misti Defend Olympic Gold: Kerri Walsh and Misti May-Treanor won their second consecutive Olympic beach volleyball gold medal last night with a 21-18, 21-18 win over China’s Tian Jia and Wang Jie.
It was the 108th consecutive match win for the USA duo; they didn’t lose a set at Beijing.

SBCSC Board To Pass Buck: The South Bend Community School Corporation Board of Trustees has decided to start a national search for Superintendent Robert Zimmerman’s re-placement, but defer the decision to the next Board.
The board recently settled with Zimmerman on a contract buyout. James Kapsa, former Jefferson Intermediate School principal, is the acting superintendent.

U.S. Rep. Tubbs Jones Dies: U.S. Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio), 58, died Wednesday of a brain hemorrhage.
Tubbs Jones was the first African-American woman to represent an Ohio district and the first to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. She was also the chairman of the House ethics committee.
