Phillies Still Losingest Team in Baseball: The World Series-bound Philadelphia Phillies have won six National League pennants and one World Series (in 1980 with Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose) but they are still the losingest old school (dating back to the 1800's) major league baseball team.
One would think that distinction would belong to the Cubbies but the Chicago National League franchise did win one World Series and and eight other National League pennants in the first half of the Twentieth Century.
They also won a NAABBP title and two National League championships as the Chicago White Stockings in the 1800's and one National League title as the Chicago Colts.
Of course, in those days a team only had to have the best record in the National League. The Cubbies have accomplished that feat several times since their last pennant—including this past season—only to fall flat in the playoffs.
During the first half of the Twentieth Century, the Phillies were not even the best team in Philadelphia. That role belonged to Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics with stars like Jimmie Foxx, Stan Coveleski, Mickey Cochrane, Frank "Home Run" Baker, Chief Bender, and Lefty Grove. The A's would have been the best team in the American League had it not been for Yankee dominance.
The Phillies gained popularity in the 1950's with the "Whiz Kid" teams but sank back into mediocrity after the A's left for Kansas City and later Oakland.
