Uncle Ron's Ramblings

Tips For National Fire Prevention Week: I don't know if we can classify this as a sermon or a lecture. If it was a sermon, we would need to have a closing hymn.

Actually there were two hot topics this week: National Fire Prevention Week and the selection of new mother Halle Berry as Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire magazine. I thought some fire prevention tips would be a little more useful or appropriate.

Of course the Halle Berry story brings up another question: does it create a combustible situation if you allow more than one hunka hunka burnin' love into a dormitory. We can probably cover that question during Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love Week (I'm not sure when that is but then I didn't find out it was National Fire Prevention Week until yesterday when the week was half over).

The first thing to remember about fires is that they spread quickly. Those who were here last year for Fire Prevention Week saw a video of a burning soccer stadium. An entire section of the stadium was engulfed in less than a minute causing numerous fatalities.

According to "Fire Safety: A Practical Approach (Google Books), fire tends to double its size at regular intervals—sometimes as quickly as within minutes. It is said that the average domestic sitting room will be totally alight in about four minutes.

Know where fire exits are and use them. Don't think you have time to go back to your bunk and retrieve whatever it is you forgot. It's not worth your life.

Another thing to remember about fires is that more people are killed by smoke than burned to death.

"FS: APA" lists six main reasons for fires: 1) Faulty electrical equipment; 2) Smoking and smoking materials; 3) Fat fryers and chip pans; 4) Portable heaters; 5) Refuse and rubbish accumulations; 6) Flammable materials.

Not only is smoking not allowed inside at CFH, lighters are not to be used in CFH to see by; lighters are not supposed to be ignited inside CFH buildings at all. The last serious fire at CFH was caused by someone using a lighter as a source of light.

Flashlights are available to borrow and they can be bought for $1. Sav-a-Lot and the dollar stores sell a handy little combination penlight/FM radio for $1.

Just to be on the safe side our closing hymn will be number 40.
