Massive Meat Recall Affects Michiana: More than 1,000,000 pounds of meat have been recalled by Minnesota-based Cargill due to possible E. Coli contamination.

Eight people in the Midwest have reportedly gotten sick from E. Coli recently.

To be safe, meat should be cooked to 160 degrees.

Ten states have been affected by the recall, including Michigan and Ohio.

Former ND Star Dies: Notre Dame distance running great Ryan Shay, 28, died during a U.S. men’s Olympic Marathon qualifying race Saturday morning.

Shay, a 2002 ND graduate, was five miles into the race.

He had been diagnosed with an enlarged heart at age 14, but was cleared to race. An enlarged heart is common among distance runners.

Shay, an All-American at ND, won a NCAA 10,000-meter Championship his senior year.

An autopsy was inconclusive.

Unfavorable Recommendation for Biodiesel Plant: The St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission has given an unfavorable recommendation to a plan for a Biodiesel Plant at State Road 23 and Mayflower.

The plant would refine new and recycled vegetable oil into biodiesel.

Richard Sutton, head of the start-up company Bio-Diesel Enterprises, says the facility would be small with 10 employees and non-polluting.

One-hundred-fifty residents signed a petition opposing the location of the facility.

The issue now has to go to the County Council.

Three Dead in Argos: Marshall County Police are investigating what they say is a double-murder and suicide in rural Argos..

A 12-year-old boy, who slept through the killings, found the victims this morning.

Police are not releasing names at this time.

Boy Hit by Van in Living Room: An eight-year-old boy was injured when he was hit by a van while eating in his home Thursday.

The driver of the automobile told police she lost control and went into the house on Roosevelt St. near Brown Intermediate School on South Bend’s west side.

The boy suffered back pain and was taken to a area hospital.

Discovery Heads for Home: Space shuttle Discovery undocked from the International Space Station today, concluding a busy 11-day stay.

The shuttle crew now begins a two-day journey back to Earth.

While at the ISS, the shuttle crew delivered a new room and conducted a risky spacewalk to repair a torn solar panel.

Writers Strike: Some 12,000 screenwriters went on strike against the U.S. film and television industry today.

The Writers Guild of America is seeking a larger share of DVD and Internet revenues for its members.

The strike will affect late-night talk shows and prime-time comedies.
