Street Work Causes Detours: Street construction, which began Monday at three major instructions in South Bend, will cause detours for the next several months.

At Ireland Road and Miami Street, crews are working on street lighting and sidewalks.

Portage Avenue at Kinyon, Queen, Bulla, McCartney, and King Streets could see delays as crews work on pedestrian crossings there.

Twyckenham and South Bend Avenue will be closed for the next week as workers install a water main extension.

Get Out of Car in Tornado: Eight of the 23 recent tornado victims in Missouri and Oklahoma died in cars, troubling experts who say the inside of a car is one of the worst places to be when a tornado hits.

Cars have the same problem as mobile homes in a storm: they aren’t anchored to the ground, so winds can get underneath them. A meteorologist says winds of less than 100 miles-per-hour can flip a car.

Weekend storms killed 26 people in Missouri, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama.

Indiana is also a prime target for tornadoes.

30,000 Buried in China Quake Debris: About 12,000 people are confirmed dead and 29,000 more were still thought to be buried under rubble in two earthquake-ravaged Chinese cities, according to the official state media.

The state-controlled news agency, Xinhua, said 3,629 were confirmed dead and 18,645 buried under rubble in the city of Mianyang. Essential services had also been affected by the quake.

It took rescue workers until Tuesday to reach Mianzhu, 60 miles from the quake’s epicenter. The estimate that 10,000 people remained buried in that city came soon after a group of 1,300 People’s Army troops reached the city.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao flew to Sichuan Province to inspect the situation. The Chinese government has sent 50,000 troops into the area.

Rescue workers are being hampered by rain and aftershocks as great as 6.0 on the Richter scale.

In the town of Juyuan, south of the epicenter, a three-story high school collapsed, burying as many as 900 students and killing at least 50, Xinhua reported.

The news agency reported today that another 1,000 students and teachers were buried and feared dead when a high school collapsed in Beichuan County. The building was reduced to a pile of rubble two yards high, it said.

In Beichuan County, 80 percent of the buildings fell and 10,000 people were injured, aside from 3,000-5,000 dead, Xinhua said.

Myanmar Regime Accused of Hoarding Cyclone Aid: The United Nations said today that only a tiny portion of international aid needed for Myanmar’s cyclone victims is making it into the country, amid reports that the military regime is hoarding good-quality foreign aid for itself and doling out rotten food.

The Myanmar government has agreed to accept relief shipments from the U.N. and foreign countries, but has largely refused entry to aid workers.

Logistical bottlenecks, poor infrastructure, and the junta’s restrictions have delayed the distribution of the aid; however, and much of it is piling up at the airport in Yangon.

Cyclone Nargis has left about 62,000 people dead or missing, according to the Myanmar government.
