Election 2008

Clinton Wins in Indiana; Obama Landslide in North Carolina: Hilary Clinton won the Indiana Democratic presidential primary, 51%-49%, but Barack Obama won the North Carolina primary, 56%-42%.

Clinton won Indiana by fewer than 23,000 votes out of more than 1.25-milllion cast.

Tuesday’s results expanded Obama’s delegate lead by nine. He has 1,876 of the 2,025 delegates he needs for the nomination. Clinton has 1,729.

With 217 delegates at state in the last six contests before the convention, Clinton has no realistic chance to overtake Obama’s lead in pledged delegates or in popular votes.

Clinton still hopes to find a way to seat delegates from Michigan and Florida, which were stripped of their delegates for holding their primaries early in defiance of the national party. Clinton won both primaries, but was the only candidate on the ballot.

The Democratic Party rules committee will meet May 31 to decide whether to seat delegates from the two states.

The winning candidate will have to rely on superdelegates—nearly 800 party insiders and officials who are free to back any candidate. One of those superdelegates is 2nd District U.S. Representative Joe Donnelly who has still not endorsed any candidate.

Former Senator and 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern, a Clinton supporter, urged her to drop out of the race and switched his endorsement to Obama.

Former U.S. Representative Jill Long-Thompson defeated Indianapolis businessman Jim Schellinger by less than 10,000 votes for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Both candidates had 50% of the vote.

Schellinger had not conceded as of press time. If the results hold up, Long-Thompson will face incumbent Mitch Daniels in the Fall.

The biggest Republican winner was Luke Puckett, who defeated Joseph Roush and Tony Zirkle for the right to oppose Donnelly in the general election. Puckett had the endorsement of the Republican Party.

One incumbent was defeated, 2nd District St. Joseph County Commissioner Steve Ross lost to Dave Thomas, 53%-47%.

John McCain, who has already clinched the nomination, got 78% of the Republican vote. Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee were still on the ballot. Paul is the only other candidate who has not officially dropped out of the race.
