Election 2008

Schellinger Concedes: Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Schellinger called his primary opponent, Jill Long Thompson at 4:15 p.m. yesterday to offer his congratulations and concede the primary election.

“We’re disappointed that we won’t get the chance to take on Mitch Daniels in November, but we wouldn’t trade the last 15 months for anything,” Schellinger—a South Bend native—said. “It truly was an amazing journey for me and my entire family.”

Earlier in the day, when more precincts were still unreported statewide, it appeared that the race was too close to call; however, the vote margin increased by a few thousand votes throughout the day. The final margin will likely be less than 0.5 percent.

“This was a hard-fought race that unfortunately was overshadowed by the presidential campaigns in Indiana,” Schellinger said. “I want to thank my fellow Democrats, my staff and my family for all of their support and kindness. We’ll never forget this experience.”

Experts say the former U.S. Representative from the Ft. Wayne district and current Argos resident faces an uphill battle against Daniels.

The governor reportedly has a war chest in excess of $5-million. Long Thompson raised less than $500,000 for the primary but she managed to win despite being outspent by Schellinger.

Hillary Gamely Soldiers On: Embattled Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton gamely soldiered yesterday, facing a sometimes hostile crowd in Shepherdstown, West Virginia--the same town where Robert E. Lee led his Confederate Army in retreat after the battle of Antietam.

A young Shepherd University student heckled Chelsea Clinton—who introduced her mother—saying “end the dynasty”. The crowd also interrupted her talk with boos and catcalls.

The New York senator made a noteworthy deviation from her usual stump speech. She promised universal health “if I’m president,” rather than “when I’m president”. She said she was proud of her two-point victory in the Indiana primary yesterday, but neglected to mention Barack Obama’s 15-point win the same day in North Carolina. She didn’t even mention her opponent.

West Virginia is one of six states that have yet to vote in the Democratic presidential race.

Putin Confirmed as Prime Minister: The Russian State Duma confirmed Vladimir Putin as prime minister by a 392-56 vote today.

The vote came a day after Putin turned the Russian presidency over to his hand-picked successor, Dmitry Medvedev. The new president said he would sign a decree making Putin prime minister later in the day.

Putin, who served eight years as president, was prime minister under the late Russian President Boris Yeltsin. He assumed the presidency when Yeltsin resigned and was elected twice. Presidents are limited to two terms under the Russian constitution.

First UN Relief Supplies Head to Myanmar: The first aircraft carrying United Nations relief supplies headed for Myanmar today after a long delay during which the insular military junta resisted international offers of large-scale aid.

American officials said they also appeared to be close to an agreement with the Myanmar government to send in aid and disaster experts, despite the acrimonious relations between the two nations and blunt recent criticisms of the junta by President George W. Bush and his wife Laura.

The official government death toll from the cyclone which devastated Myanmar is 20,500 but the top American diplomat there said that the toll could reach 100,000 if aid does not reach the survivors soon.
