Student Arrested at WHS: South Bend Police arrested an 18-year-old student Monday, accused of carrying a loaded handgun to school.
SBPD spokesman Phil Trent said the 18-year-old student had the handgun hidden in his clothing. A fellow student spotted the gun and reported it to the classroom teacher.
The teacher then escorted the student to the administrative offices and police were called.
Trent said there is no indication the student threatened anyone at Washington.
Officials Say No Threat to Local Water: Local officials say there is no threat to area municipal water supplies.
An Associated Press investigation had discovered prescription drugs in the water supply of 41-million Americans. The drugs were detected in 24 metropolitan areas including Detroit and Louisville.
Officials say communities St. Joseph County, Elkhart County and northwestern Indiana get their water from wells instead of surface water.
In South Bend not only is the water hundreds of feet underground, it's also protected by a layer of clay called an aquitard.
The cities with traces of prescription drugs use surface water supplies -- like lakes and rivers, and officials say they tend to be more prone to contaminants.
The Environmental Protection Agency regulates drinking water standards through the Safe Water Drinking Act. This includes testing for hundreds of chemicals, but it doesn't include prescription drugs.
