Obama, Clinton Set Up Headquarters: Democractic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have set up headquarters in South Bend.

Barack’s headquarters are at the old First Source Bank building at Jefferson and Main Streets, next to the County-City Building; Clinton’s are between the YMCA and IUSB at 1345 Northside Boulevard.

Clinton visited the area Friday morning, March 28, and spoke to a crowd at Mishawaka High School.

Obama has said he will be coming to the South Bend-Mishawaka area but has not yet specified a time or place.

Announcements

Community Clean-up: There will be a Community Clean-up today beginning at 3:30 p.m. in lieu of the Monday night meeting. Everyone meet in the dining room.

Regis to Host Dance Marathon: The 24-hour “Dance for the Homeless” dance marathon will be April 19-20 at the IUSB Student Activities Center.

There will be live remotes by local radio stations; music by Vyagra Falls, Stillshot, New Collossus, Cornell Bass, Blammo, and Livewire; and a special appearance by Regis Philbin.

Get Your Act Together: Center Idol 2008 will take place April 7 at the Monday night meeting in the community room.

Sign-up will start next week. As in past Center Idols, “Simon”, “Paula”, and “Randy” will be there to judge and critique the acts.

Think You’ve Got What it Takes to Be a Star: Drumming and dancing classes are coming to CFH and you’re invited to participate.

Professional drummers and dancers are coming to offer fun, music, and expertise on the following days: Thursday, March 13, 7:30-9 p.m.; Thursday, March 20, 7:30-9 p.m.; Thursday, March 27, 7:30-9 p.m.; Sunday, March 30, 2-4 p.m.; Thursday, April 10, 7:30-9 p.m.; Sunday, April 20, 2-4 p.m.; Thursday, May 1, 7:30-9 p.m.

Car Registration: CFH Guests: If you own a motor vehicle, you need to register it with your coach or it could be towed.

“One Step At a Time” Running Group: Three days a week (times and days TBA). Will meet at CFH. Open to Center guests and anyone else who is interested in learning to run. All runners will receive the necessary running gear (i.e. running shoes, shorts, warm-ups, shirts, hats, etc.). There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board by the basement stairway near the men’s lounge.

Artistic Newsletter: Are you an artist, poet or writer? Place submissions for the Artistic Newsletter in Emily Pickerill’s box. Express your talents and ideas by participating. Start submitting as soon as possible.

Art Group: Interested in exercising your creative spirit? Want to see some of your original art work on display in the hallways?

Tennessee Women 74, ND 64: All-American Candace Parker led the way for the Volunteers with 34 points and 13 rebounds as they earned their eighth straight trip to the NCAA Regional Finals.

Notre Dame (25-9) built a 33-31 lead at halftime as they held Tennessee to 1-for-5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Vols (33-2) went on a 14-0 run starting at 18:09 in the second half.

Charel Allen scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Irish. Other top ND contributors were: Becca Bruszewski with 16 points and six rebounds; Lindsay Schrader, 13 points and nine rebounds; and Ashley Barlow, 11 points and six rebounds.

The Irish nearly matched the taller Vols on the boards with 42 rebounds to 45 for Tennessee.

ND Hockey 7, New Hampshire 3 (Friday): The Irish Icers got goals from six different players to upset the top-seeded team in the NCAA Hockey Tournament.

Christian Hanson scored two goals for ND. Ryan Thang added two assists and a goal. Mark Van Guilder had three assists.

ND Hockey 3, Michigan St. 1 (Saturday): Mark Van Guilder scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 5:54 left as the Irish gained a measure of revenge against the school which eliminated them from last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Irish became the first fourth seed to advance to the Frozen Four. ND had gone from a 16-4 start and a number-six national ranking to an 8-11-4 finish.

ND faces CCHA rival Michigan April 10 in Denver.

ND head coach Jeff Jackson is going for his third NCAA championship; he won two with Lake Superior State.

Hamlin Finally Gets Win at Martinsville: Denny Hamlin passed fellow Virginian Jeff Burton on the 427th lap and held on for his first win at Martinsville, VA.

Hamlin has finished in the top three twice on the smallest, tightest oval in the Sprint Cup series.

Hendrick Motorsports drivers led 371 laps of the race but couldn’t get the checkered flag.

Burton grabbed the lead in the Sprint Cup standings.

South Bend’s Ryan Newman (12 Dodge) dropped to 11th in the Cup standings with a 19th-place finish.

Scott Dixon Wins in IRL Opener: Scott Dixon took advantage of some bad luck by leader Tony Kanaan and won the Gainsco Auto Insurance Indy 300 at Homestead, FL. This weekend.

Victory appeared to be in Kanaan’s grasp when he got tangled up with a sliding car. Dixon, who also won the pole, took the lead with three laps to go and edged Marco Andretti by .058 seconds. Kanaan slipped to eighth after his mishap.

Dixon had finished a close second in the final IRL standings last year.

U. Cincinnati Baseball 4, ND 3 (Sunday): The host Irish (13-9-1, 4-2 Big East) got the winning run on in the person of A.J. Pollock but couldn’t get him home as the Bearcats won the rubber match of a three-game series.

David Mills had singled in the bottom of the ninth with two out. Pollock followed with a check-swing single—his fourth hit of the day—but Mills was thrown out at the plate when he failed to heed the third base coach’s stop sign and was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

The two teams split a Saturday doubleheader; the Bearcats won the opener, 5-3, for their fifth win in a row and ND took the nightcap, 4-3.

ND Softball 1-2, (17) DePaul 2-0: Jody Valdiva pitched a five-hit shutout in the nightcap of a Sunday doubleheader at Chicago.

The Irish (17-10, 1-1 Big East) won at DePaul for the first time since the 2005 season and broke the Blue Demons 25-game conference win streak.

(7) ND Men’s LaCrosse 19, Bellarmine 7: Michael Podgajny scored four times as the Irish (7-1) amassed 15 goals in the first half.

Grant Krebs and Peter Christmas added three and two goals, respectively. Irish senior goalkeeper Joey Kemp made 10 saves to record his 33rd career victory.

ND Women’s LaCrosse 18, Connecticut 11: Jillian Byers scored seven goals to lead the visiting Irish (8-3, 2-1 Big East).

Byers leads the team in scoring for the season with 49 goals.

The Irish are ½ game behind unbeatens Georgetown and Syracuse in the Big East standings. They meet Georgetown April 12.

(19) ND Women’s Tennis 6, (25) IU 1: Notre Dames top-ranked doubles team of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft improved their record to 27-5 with an 8-4 win at ND’s Eck Pavilion.

It was the sixth straight win for the Irish.

(2) Ohio St. Men’s Tennis 6, ND 1: Daniel Stahl got the only Irish point with a win at number six singles at the Eck Pavilion Sunday.

The Irish (10-8) have lost four straight. It was only the second home loss of the season for ND.

Silver Hawks to Play ND: The South Bend Silver Hawks will host Notre Dame Wednesday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m.

Nationals Win Stateside Opener: Ryan Zimmerman’s walk-off homer gave the Washington Nationals a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in the inaugural game for the new, $611-million Nationals Park.

Braves pitchers had retired 24 consecutive batters before Zimmerman.

It was the opening stateside game of the Major League Baseball season and the first National League contest. The Oakland Athletics and defending world champion Boston Red Sox split a two-game series in Tokyo.

Obama Gets Another Senate Endorsement: Barack Obama received another endorsement from a female senator today in his race for the Democratic presidential nonmination.

Freshman Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) said she was forced to choose between two friends and chose Obama, the winner of her home-state caucuses.

Klobuchar’s announcement follows endorsements by Senators Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Bob Casey (D-PA).

Casey is trying to help Obama cut in to Hillary Clinton’s double-digit lead in Pennsylvania polls. The delegate-rich Pennsylvania primary is April 22.

The two candidates each have the backing of 13 senators, who are superdelegates to the Democratic convention. Superdelegates are not committed to any candidate like regular delegates.

HUD Secretary Announces Resignation: Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Alphonso Jackson announced his resignation today. The resignation will be effective April 18.

Jackson has been under pressure from Congress over his refusal to answer questions about a federal lawsuit and whether he tried to steer land to a business friend.

Mugabe Behind in Zimbabwe Vote: Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai is leading incumbent Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe’s presidential elections.

Mugabe has ruled the former British colony of Rhodesia for 28 years. Zimbabwe has the world’s highest inflation rate of 100,580 percent.

The country used to be the breadbasket of Africa before Mugabe seized white-owned farms. Now it has to import food.
