Nation/World

Italy Returns Berlusconi to Office: Italian voters returned billionaire Silvio Berlusconi to the prime minister’s office this week.

Berlusconi, who served as prime minister from 2001-2006, replaces Romano Prodi, whose center-left coalition fell apart after 20 months.

It is Italy’s 62d government in 63 years since the end of World War II.

President Bush to Meet Pope on Arrival in U.S.: President George Bush will make the unusual gesture of meeting Pope Benedict XVI upon the Pontiff’s arrival today at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington. It will be the first time the president has greeted a foreign leader there.

The pope will turn 81 during his stay in the U.S. A crowd of up to 12,000—larger than the gathering for Queen Elizabeth II—is expected Wednesday (the pope’s birthday) at the White House for the pope’s official visit to the American president. The White House is also planning a gala dinner that evening—even though Benedict won’t be there. The pope will be attending a prayer service with American bishops.

The pope will celebrate mass at the new Nationals Park baseball stadium in Washington and Yankee Stadium in New York during his visit. He will also give an address at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Opposing Sides Blame Each Other for Violence in Zimbabwe: Opposing sides are blaming each other for violence in Zimbabwe in the wake of the country’s presidential elections.

A strike to protest the delayed release of election results is scheduled to begin today. The strike has been called for by Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) to protest the delay in releasing the final vote tallies in the presidential election.

The MDC claims it won a majority of the vote in the presidential race. Independent election observers say MDC fell just short of a majority in the voting with 49% of the vote.

The Zimbabwe Election Commission has postponed releasing official results until at least the end of the week.

If Tsvangirai has fallen short of a majority, Zimbabwean law requires that he face incumbent Robert Mugabe in a run-off.
