Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Still Time to Sign Up for “Idol”: So far the response to the call for “Center Idol” contestants has been underwhelming so it appears I am going to have to carry out my threat to sing.

After going through “The Impossible Dream” countless times, something jumped out at me. It should be pointed out that “The Impossible Dream” is a song from a Broadway musical, not holy writ; but it still contains some profound truths.

Out hero, scorned and covered with scars, still strives with his last ounce of courage to reach that unreachable star. We don’t know if he actually reached it, yet the world is a better place for it.

Is the world a better place because of those who do the scorning (or the scarring). No, that was never their intention. Even those who merely dream don’t accomplish much, although just about every great achievement begins with a dream.

So, by all means, keep on striving.

End of sermon. Our closing hymn is number 50.

Nation/World

Zimbabwe Elections (VOA): A Zimbabwean court will decide Tuesday whether to force the release of presidential election results.

President Robert Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party has demanded a recount and a further delay in the release of results.

Opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who received the most votes in the election, flew to South Africa Sunday night to ask for help in persuading Mugabe to step down.

South African President Thabo Mbeki had mediated failed pre-election talks between Tsvangirai’s and Mugabe’s parties. Mbeki did manage to get an agreement to have the election results posted outside the polling places.

Meanwhile, several foreign journalists—including Barry Bearak of the New York Times—remained in custody today after being charged with “illegally observing an election without official accreditation,” according to their lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa. She said the offense carried a maximum penalty of a fine, two years in prison, or both.

Mtetwa said three judges declined Monday to hear her urgent application for the release of the journalists, who are being held at Harare’s central police station.
