Nation/World

Zimbabwe Elections (VOA): The United States says it is troubled by reports that foreign journalists have been arrested in Zimbabwe, where tensions are rising over the uncertain results of last week’s presidential elections.

U.S. national security spokesman Gordon Johndroe was commenting in Bucharest on witness reports that at least five journalists were detained in Harare Thursday, including a New York Times correspondent.

Officials say they are being investigated for practicing journalism without proper accreditation.

Security forces are also reported to have raided hotel rooms in Harare being used as offices by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

Meanwhile, President Robert Mugabe is presiding over a meeting of his party’s leadership Friday, to discuss his next step following Saturday’s elections in which the party lost control of the lower house of parliament.

The MDC says it will ask Zimbabwe’s high court to order the election to release the results of the presidential vote.

The MDC says its candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, has defeated Mugabe in the presidential race with 50.3% of the vote. According to Zimbabwean law a candidate for president needs a 50% majority plus one vote to avoid a runoff.

There are conflicting reports from the Zimbabwean capital—one that Mugabe is considering stepping down and another than he is considering ruling by decree to postpone the runoff beyond the required three week deadline. Ruling by decree would also allow him to change electoral laws.

Robotic Spacecraft Docks Successfully: Europe’s new Jules Verne robotic spacecraft made a nearly flawless first docking at the International Space Station Thursday with a cargo of tons of needed supplies.

The Jules Verne, named after the visionary French science fiction author, is the first of a new class of station supply ships called Automatic Transfer Vehicles. The craft was built by the nations of the European Space Agency and is guided from a control center in Toulouse, France.

Brian Cowen Likely New Irish Prime Minister: Irish Finance Minister Brian Cowen received the support of half the cabinet ministers in his Fianna Fail Party Thursday to become Ireland’s next prime minister.

If elected by his fellow members of parliament Cowen will succeed Bertie Ahern whose resignation will be effective May 6.
