South Bend, Indiana; October 27, 2008

Announcements

Halloween Party (13-22-year-olds only): October 31; 3 p.m.-6 p.m.; in the newly-remodeled resilience room.

We will have food provided by Jersey Mikes and watch a scary movie! If you have any suggestions for the movie or any questions please see Erin.

Something To Sink Your Teeth Into (or to sink its teeth into you): The producer of the first vampire movie, "Nosferatu", did not believe in cute, cuddly vampires like Angel, Spike, Harmony, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, or Kirsten Dunst.

The poster didn't specify whether the version of "Nosferatu" shown October 31 in the Community Room will be the original 1922 silent German version (that creature of the night was downright creepy, but then isn't that the way a vampire is supposed to be. If they all looked like Brad Pitt or Kirsten Dunst people would be wanting to get their necks bitten) or the 1979 low-budget German remake directed by Werner Herzog.

A 2000 movie, "Shadow of the Vampire", told of the making of the 1922 version. It was based on the theory that the actor F. W. Murnau hired to play the title character was a real vampire. Actor Max Schreck, of course, was no longer alive to defend himself although if he was a real vampire he could have just been laying low in his coffin.

The movie borrowed its plot from Bram Stoker's "Dracula" but since the studio didn't own the rights the vampire's name was changed to Nosferatu and the count's name was changed from Dracula to Orlok.

Art: Try out your creativity, Sundays, any time from 2-4:30 p.m. in the Arts and Crafts Room.

Qi-Gong: Qi-Gong will be in recess from October 20-November 3. It will resume its regular schedule November 10.

Vote Early and Often: St. Joseph County residents can vote early (just once, though, this is not Chicago) at the first floor of the County-City Building or at the County Courthouse building in Mishawaka and avoid standing in line at the polls on election day.

Meditation: Wednesdays, 7:45 a.m., in the STAR classroom. Open to staff and guests.

I Hear the Sound of Distant Drums: If anyone is interested in forming a drum corps please see Juanetta.
