Clinton Speaking at Mishawaka High School: Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is speaking at Mishawaka High School this morning after being turned down by the South Bend Community School Corporation.

The Clinton campaign had approached SBCSC about speaking at Washington High School on South Bend’s west side. (See SBCSC press release on column at right).

The MSH doors opened to the public this morning at 8:45 a.m. Senator Clinton speaks at 10:45 a.m.

SBCSC Press Release Explains Clinton Denial: On Wednesday, march 26, 2008 Dr. Robert Zimmerman, Superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation informed the Hillary Clinton campaign staff that their request to hold a “town hall meeting” at Washington High School had been denied.

This decision was given considerable thought and was made by Dr. Zimmerman after contacting the Board of School Trustees, members of the SBCSC administrative staff and the Clinton campaign staff. Several reasons were considered before making this decision.

1. This rally was a public event and not a student event. The event was to be free and open to the public. It was not intended for Washington High School students. The only students who would be invited to attend would be voting age seniors.

2. The #1 concern of the SBCSC is the safety and security of our students. The size and scope of this event could have increased risk to student safety. Having several thousand additional citizens arriving at the same time students were walking, driving and arriving by bus would have been very chaotic. Arrangements requested by the campaign staff would have restricted students moving between classes and to the cafeteria.

3. It has been a long-standing practice of the South Bend Community School Corporation not to allow political campaigning during the school day by students, faculty, or staff. Political campaigns may rent a school facility after hours to hold an event. The SBCSC would have been willing to work with the Clinton staff to arrange an event after school hours.

After weighing all the issues surrounding the proposed Clinton campaign appearance, the request was denied.

MANA Project Could Boost Local Economy: One local official has called the effect of the Midwest Academy of Nanoelectronics and Architectures (MANA) on the local economy “the biggest development industry-wide since the arrival of the Studebaker family.

The local MANA will be one of only four such research centers in the world. The others are located in Los Angeles; Austin, TX; and Albany, NY.

The center will be located on the Notre Dame campus while the new Innovation Park is being built at S.R. 23 in South Bend.

Local leaders are hoping that South Bend’s Studebaker Corridor could be revitalized with spin-offs of the new nanotechnology.

Clintons, RFK Daughter Visit South Bend:
Former President Bill Clinton’s visit to the West Side Democratic Club is being called the biggest event for local Democrats since Robert F. Kennedy, Sr., stopped here during his 1968 presidential run.
That being so, it was only fitting that RFK’s daughter, former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend started the festivities off. Kennedy Townsend was introduced by former Indiana Governor and South Bend Mayor Joe Kernan.
The former president and daughter Chelsea arrived at the club a little after noon. Bill Clinton spoke especially about the need to change the health care system in the United States. When he asked how many in the crowd didn’t have health coverage nearly everyone raised a hand.
“This is the only wealthy country on Earth where people would ask that during an election,” the elder Clinton said.
The Clinton party also traveled to Rochester High School, the first visit to Fulton County by a former president.
Chelsea will visit the Notre Dame campus Wednesday along with actor Sean Astin, star of the movie “Rudy”.
