Details of Kenya Deal Being Worked Out: Representatives began working today on details of a power-sharing agreement aimed at ending two months of ethnic violence that killed more than 1,000 people after a disputed presidential election.
Kenya’s feuding politicians shook hands Thursday and smiled for the cameras. The real test, though, for President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga is whether the reluctant partners can work together to heal a divided nation.
Under the agreement, Odinga will become prime minister and have the power to “coordinate and supervise” the government—more authority than Kibaki wanted to yield.
The bitterness between them runs deep, however, and both men have traded accusations about inciting violence, stealing the December 27 vote, and destroying the nation.
Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the mediator, had to prompt them to shake hands Thursday as the cameras rolled. Still, a deal was signed, and about 500 people marched in celebration Friday in the western town of Kitale.
“Finally hope is back, Kenya has been reborn and it is like we are ushering in a new year!” shouted a marcher waving a picture of Odinga.
It was unclear when Odinga would take over as prime minister, Kibaki said he is reconvening parliament next Thursday to begin work on the needed constitutional changes.
Representatives for the two sides were meeting Friday to work out details and start hashing out some of the longer term reforms.

Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Hail to Thee, Blythe Spirits:
You don’t have to be a great poet to participate in next Monday’s (March 3) Special Poetry Jam.
Louis L’Amour was one of the most widely-read authors of prose of his day. He was also the prototype of the rugged, manly characters who were the central figures of his books and stories. One of the ways he made a living was prize-fighting.
No one was going to stop him from writing poetry, even if his verse was not as good as his prose. He enjoyed writing it.
The same for General George S. Patton, Jr. Who was going to tell him his poetry stunk.
You can read the works of Shelley, Keats, Tennyson, or Longfellow; or the two above-mentioned lesser poets; just don’t pass them off as your own.
You could also read “Casey at the Bat” again to improve the disappointing grades you got the last two times you read them for class assignments, although I don’t know who that would apply to.
Also (refer to the announcement below) no foul or suggestive language. That means nothing about little old ladies from Nantucket (unless your grandmother was from Nantucket).

Annan, Kenyan Rivals Forge Agreemen
t: Former United Nations chief Kofi Annan says Kenya’s political rivals have agreed to form a coalition government in an effort to end the country’s political crisis.
Speaking in Nairobi Thursday, Mr. Annan said he would give details of the agreement at an upcoming news conference.
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga are expected to sign the agreement Thursday.
Mr. Annan has been leading talks to end the political crisis sparked by December’s disputed presidential election. The opposition accused President Kibaki of rigging the vote to ensure victory.
That election dispute sparked riots and ethnic clashes across Kenya that killed more than 1,000 people.
Signs of progress in the talks emerged Wednesday, when the opposition canceled plans for a nationwide rally, and President Kibaki said his government would create the posts of prime minister and two deputies under the current constitution.
Thursday’s announcement came after Mr. Annan met with Mr. Kibaki, Mr. Odinga and African Union chief Jakaya Kikwete, the president of Tanzania.

William F. Buckley, Jr., 82, Dies:
Author and conservative commentator William F. Buckley, Jr., was found dead in his home Wednesday. He had been suffering from emphysema.
Buckley became famous for his intellectual political writings in his magazine, the National Review, and his frequent television appearances, including on his own long-running "Firing Line."
U.S. Border “Virtual Fence” Delayed: Technical problems have forced the Bush administration to retool a high-tech “virtual fence” along the U.S.- Mexico border and will delay the first phase for at least three years, the Washington Post reported today.
Department of Homeland Security officials and congressional auditors told lawmakers on Wednesday that problems found in the 28-mile pilot project built near Nogales, Arizona, by Boeing Company will require a change in plans, the Post reported.
The $20-million project of sensor towers and advanced mobile communications was supposed to be completed in mid-2007 but has been delayed by software problems.
The “virtual fence” is supposed to work in conjunction with a 700-mile actual barrier that has drawn opposition along its planned route.
Turkey Refuses to Give Timetable for Pullout: Turkish political and military leaders refused to give U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates an exact date for the withdrawal of Turkish troops fighting Kurdish separatists in Northern Iraq, with Chief of General Staff Yasar Buyukyanit merely saying that they would leave in the “shortest time possible.”
“The shortest time possible is a relative concept. For some it may be one day or for others it might mean a year,” Buyukyanit was quoted by NTV private television as saying before talks with Gates in Ankara.

The Panthers signed their former leading receiver, Muhsin Muhammad, a week after he was cut by the Bears.
The Colts released linebacker Rob Morris and defensive tackle Anthony McFarland.
The New York Giants were reportedly offering Super Bowl winning head coach Tom Coughlin a four-year contract extension worth $21-million a year.

Election 2008

Former Candidate Dodd Endorses Obama:
Former presidential candidate Christopher Dodd has thrown his support behind the candidacy of Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
The Connecticut senator planned to formally announce his endorsement of his colleague from Illinois today and will campaign with Obama in Ohio.
There are no primaries this week. The next big round of primaries will be a week from today, March 4, when 370 regular Democratic delegates and 74 super-delegates will be at stake in Ohio (141, 20), Rhode Island (21, 11), Texas (193, 35) and Vermont (15, 8).
There will be 265 delegates available on the Republican side: Ohio, 88; Rhode Island, 20; Texas, 140; and Vermont, 17.
The latest unofficial delegate counts show Obama with 1,374 of the 2,025 needed for the nomination to 1,279 for Hilary Clinton.
John McCain is 178 delegates short of the 1,191 he needs. Ex-candidate Mitt Romney has 272, Mike Huckabee 254, and Ron Paul 14.

Cuban Parliament Sticks with Old Guard:
The Cuban parliament went against the predictions of expert Cuba watchers and picked a member of the “Old Guard” as heir to new president Raul Castro.
The new first vice president, Jose Ramon Machado, 77, is a physician who fought with the Castro brothers’ guerillas and treated their wounds. He has served in Communist Party leadership positions for decades.
As expected, the parliament unanimously endorsed Raul Castro to take over for his brother, long-time Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
The elder Castro retired last week because of declining health. Raul had been acting president for the last 18 months.

Dakich 1-0 as IU Head Coach: Former IU player and assistant Dan Dakich is 1-0 after his first game as Hoosier interim head basketball coach.
Armon Bassettt scored 24 points, reserve Jordan Crawford 21, and freshman Eric Gordon 18 points after the team had threatened to quit because of the change in head coaches.
D.J. White, who possibly benefited the most from former coach Kelvin Sampson’s teaching, had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Sampson was asked to resign after being charged by the NCAA with five major recruiting violations. The request was sweetened by a $750,000 contract buyout.
Dakich, a Merrillville native who led Gary Andrean High School to the final four under the old single-class Indiana tournament format, was a player and assistant coach for Bobby Knight at IU.
In 1997 he was hired as Bowling Green’s head basketball coach.
During his 10 years at BG, Dakich posted a 156-140 mark, which placed him in a three-way tie for the most wins by a men’s basketball coach at the University. He was also only the third coach in BG history to put together four 18+ win seasons.
In his last five years at the BG helm, Dakich posted only one winning season in Mid-American Conference play—a 10-8 mark in 2005. He resigned after a 3-13 conference season and was re-hired by IU to be Director of Basketball Operations. He later became an assistant under Sampson which means he has had the benefit of working under two of the outstanding coaches in the game.

Turkey’s military sent ground troops into Northern Iraq Thursday night in an operation aimed at weakening Kurdish militants there, but it was unclear how many or how long they would stay.

Kenya’s Opposition Threatens “Mass Civil Disobedience”: Kenya’s opposition party says it will embark on a “mass civil disobedience campaign next week” if its demands aren’t met in the intensive negotiations aimed at defusing the policitcal crisis in the tense East African nation.
The lawmakers are calling for the creation of a prime minister’s position and proportional sharing of powers in any new government. The Kenyan constitution does not call for a prime minister.
Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has been overseeing the negotiations.
Both sides have agreed to talks and have given the go-ahead for the creation of an independent committee to investigate irregularities in the recent presidential election and suggest reforms.
The alleged irregularities have sparked deadly protests in what had been one of the most stable countries in Africa.

National Beef Recall Hits Home: The nation’s largest meat recall has affected local schools and service agencies, including CFH.
The Agriculture Department recalled 143-million pounds of the beef –a California meatpackers entire production for the past two years—because the company did not prevent ailing animals from entering the U.S. food supply.
The Food Bank of Indiana, CFH, and Hope Rescue Mission immediately pulled the meat off their shelves.
“Our relationship with Food Bank is still wonderful,” CFH Director of Development and Public Relations Jacqueline Kronk said.
USDA officials emphasized that the recall was only a precaution, that they believe the meat poses little or no hazard to consumers and that most of it was eaten long ago.

McCain, Lobbyist Deny Inappropriate Relationship:
John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, denied reports of an inappropriate relationship with a female lobbyist.
The Arizona senator described the woman in question, lobbyist Vicki Iseman, as a friend.
Published reports in the New York Times and Washington Post said McCain and Iseman each denied having a romantic relationship.
Neither story asserted that there was a romantic relationship and offered no evidence that there was, reporting only that aides worried about the appearance of McCain having close ties to a lobbyist with business before the Senate Commerce Committee on which he served.

Obama Widens Lead With Decisive Wins in Hawaii, Wisconsin:
Barack Obama widened his lead in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination with decisive wins in the Wisconsin primary and Hawaii caucuses Tuesday.
The Wisconsin vote was not as close as the polls indicated with the junior senator from Illinois winning 58%-41%. Obama was expected the win in the state of his birth, Hawaii, and he did overwhelmingly, 76%-24%.
The AP count shows Obama with 1,303 of the 2,025 delegates needed for nomination to 1,233 for Clinton.
Republicans voted in Wisconsin and Washington state. John McCain won in Wisconsin, 55%-37% and was leading in Washington state, 49%-22% with 57% of the precincts reporting.
With the 31 Wisconsin delegates McCain has 939 delegates. If ex-candidate Mitt Romney’s delegates switch to McCain—which they’re not obligated to do even though Romney has endorsed McCain—that would give him 1,192, one more than the 1,191 he needs to wrap up the nomination.

Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Note to Paris Hilton--Your 15 Minutes are Up:
Life is not fair department. Why is it that people like Paris Hilton can sell their dubious talents for top dollar while people like David Evans (and other members of Creative Word Ministries) give freely of their considerable talents.
I know David is going to appreciate being compared to Paris Hilton. He already had to point out to me that he is not the Queen of the West. Actually I didn’t say that. I said that he is not related to Dale Evans, the late Queen of the West or veteran actor Gene Evans who played the father on the 1950’s “My Friend Flicka” television series. Dale’s given name was actually Frances Octavia Smith.
David researched, wrote, directed, and choreographed the CFH production of “The Underground Railroad.”
The play was entertaining and informative. It is based on actual historical incidents.
One came away from the play with an appreciation not only for David’s talents but for those of the guests and staff members who made up the cast.
The cast members did double and triple duty as slaves, abolitionists, and dancers.
David and the cast put in two-three hours, three nights a week in the month leading up to the performance. They worked overtime the past week.
One also wonders, with all the work put into the production, whether there will be demands for an encore performance.

Election 2008

Hawaii, Wisconsin Go to Polls:
Barack Obama hopes to continue the momentum which has propelled him slightly ahead of Democratic rival Hilary Clinton in the Hawaii caucuses and Wisconsin primary today.
Polls show the two in a close race in Wisconsin. Obama is given the edge in Hawaii because he was born there and graduated from a Hawaiian high school.
Republicans will also vote in Wisconsin.
GOP front-runner John McCain picked up the endorsement of the 41st President George H.W. Bush, father of the current president.
McCain has an overwhelming lead over his closest remaining challenger Mike Huckabee.

Castro Formally Steps Down:
Cuba’s Fidel Castro is stepping down after almost half a century in power.
In a letter to the Cuban people, which was run overnight in the online edition of the Cuban Communist Daily Paper Granma, the 81-year-old leader conceded that he no longer has the strength to continue as President of the State Council and Commander in Chief.
Raul Castro, 76, who has been acting President since his older brother’s intestinal surgery in the summer of 2006, will be formally installed this weekend.
Left temporarily unanswered is the question of who will succeed the new president as the heir-apparent.
The elder Castro first seized power in 1959 after leading an insurgency against Dictator Fulgencia Batista.
Musharraf’s Party Accepts Defeat: Pakistan appeared to be heading for a transition to an elected civilian government Tuesday after President Pervez Musharraf told visiting United States senators that he accepted the resounding defeat of his party in elections, and would work with a new Parliament.
After fears that violence and vote rigging would mar the polling, international election observers described the victory for the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-N as an accurate reflection of the voting.
The nearly complete election tally today showed the Pakistan Peoples Party winning 80 of the 242 contested seats; the Pakistan Muslim League-N with 66; and the pro-Musharraf party trailing with 38.
The leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, Nawaz Sharif, who was prime minister twice in the 199s, is now in an important position to help forge the new government with Asis Ali Zardari, the leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
Sharif’s last government was overthrown when Musharraf seized power.
Zardari is the widower of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

McCain Picks Up Delegates:
Republican front-runner John McCain picked up 50 more national convention delegates from Michigan and Louisiana this weekend.
Thirty-two of Louisiana’s 47 delegates told the Associated Press that they intend to vote for the Arizona senator.
The majority of Michigan’s presidential delegates said they will back McCain now that Michigan primary winner Mitt Romney has dropped out of the race. It is still unclear how many Michigan delegates will be seated at the convention since the state had been penalized for holding its primary early.
The new delegates give McCain 903 of the 1.191 delegates he needs to clinch the nomination. Mike Huckabee has 245 and Romney’s total drops to 253.

Shannon Now has Two Belated Valentine
s: Shannon Ripley (formerly Myers) now has two belated Valentines: daughter Ivy and husband David.
Shannon and David were married yesterday on Ivy’s birthday—the day after Valentine’s Day. So one could also say that Ivy got a new stepfather for a birthday present.
They were united by a magistrate at the St. Joseph County Courthouse.
Shannon wore a knee-length white dress with a garland in her hair. They managed to get David into a black suit with tie but Ivy insisted on wearing her usual jeans instead of the new dress she had gotten for the occasion.
Hopefully David won’t have any trouble remembering his anniversary.

Shannon’s Belated Valentine is Three:
Three years ago today Shannon Myers welcomed a belated Valentine, daughter Ivy.
Since Ivy and her best bud (most of the time) Autumn were born only a day apart, they both partied together yesterday. Both girls like to get out on the dance floor and bust a move. Ivy’s style is more improvisational while Autumn has two older sisters to teach her some classy dance steps.
