Tribute to Gale Diedrich: Those people at the regular 6 p.m. Monday night meeting in the CFH Community room paid a brief tribute to former Center for the Homeless guest Gale Diedrich.

Gale, 52, was found dead Monday afternoon, October 22, in a wooded area east of the Mishawaka Super 8 Motel on Lincolnway East. An autopsy in Ft. Wayne has confirmed that the death was accidental.

“Gale was always kind, always ready to help, and always had a smile on his face,” said CFH Director of Operations Tammy Oehm.

CFH Director Steve Camilleri said that he didn’t plan to preach but wound up doing so, taking as his text the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

According to Steve, Gale told his friends at the CFH that his family was dead. After the report of Gale’s passing, Steve received a visitor, Gale’s brother Terry, 50.

Terry told Steve that he hadn’t seen Gale in seven years, that he would like to have seen him before his passing.

“There is a lot of disconnectedness here due to crime, drugs or whatever,” said Steve. “Anyone who says his family is dead shows disconnectedness. We have to forgive ourselves and try to reconnect.”

“If something has disconnected you, know there is hope that you can reconnect,” Steve concluded.

Staph Infection: Several cases of a drug-related staph infection, MRSA, have been reported in Indiana. There has been at least one fatality.

“Dr. Z” Recommends Flu Shots: Brandon Zabukovic, M.D. (Dr. Z) of the Memorial Clinic told guests and staff at the Monday night to “get a flu shot wherever you can get it.”

Dr. Z answered some common flu-related questions.

§The vaccine currently being used does not use a live virus; it will not give you the flu. The nasal spray does contain a live virus.

§Having the flu does not give you an immunity to it. Protection from the flu shot fades in five to six months which is why they are usually given before the start of the flu “season” in October.

§The true influenza “season” lasts from October-November through February-March.

§Flu has nothing to do with the common cold.

§Over-the-counter remedies can make you feel better and some can shorten the illness. There is no “magic bullet to help you once you’ve been exposed.

§People with auto-immune diseases should still get the vaccine.

Bucks 93 Bullls 88: Yi Jianlian made his inauspicious debut for the Bucks, but fellow rookie Joakim Noah looked much more the polished pro in Milwaukee’s 93-88 victory over the Chicago Bulls in the exhibition opener on Tuesday night.
“As a rookie player in my first season there aren’t just one or two points I need to work on. There aare quite a lot,” Yi said.
Yi fouled out in 16 minutes, managing only three points with two steals.
“The rules of FIBA and the rules of NBA are different; it takes time for me to deal with this through more training,” he said.
Noah, who led Florida to back-to-back titles in college, was just at intense as he had been in his final game with the Gators when he entered late in the first quarter. The ninth pick of the draft opened with a slam and blocked Andrew Bogut’s shot on the ensuing possession.
“It felt good being able to play,” Noah said. “I got a great pass and that’s my job around the rim, try to make everything.”
Noah finished with six points, fo;ur rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block in 23 minutes. Chicago got 13 from Andres Nocioni and 10 apiece from Luol Deng, Ben Wallace and rookie Aaaron Gray to go with six rebounds. Bogut scored 14 points for the Bucks, Charlie Bell 13 and Royal Ivey 10.
