Muffet and Lady Irish Collect for Homeless: Notre Dame, Ind. –The holiday season will be much brighter for numerous families around Michiana, thanks to the generosity of hundreds of people who contributed to the first-ever Fighting Irish Women’s Basketball “Dish for the Holidays” food drive, to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.
Head coach Muffet McGraw and her staff, along with all 11 Lady Irish players, braved the cold temperatures on Thursday morning to man numerous collection stations around the Notre Dame campus. When the two-hour food drive concluded, eight full boxes of non-perishable food and sundries (close to 400 pounds) were packed on a truck and headed to the Food Bank. In addition, several pasers-by offered monetary donations to the effort, with $646 collected to complement the food drive.
“We are just so grateful for the support and enthusiasm shown by the people of Michiana to come out and donate whatever they can for this event,” Coach McGraw said. “It’s the responsibility of each of us as citizens here in Michiana to do all we can to make a difference and improve the lives of our community. I hope we were able to do just a little bit to help that process along and make the holidays more enjoyable for our friends and neighbors.”
The Food Bank of Northern Indiana provides some of CFH’s food.
The Lady Irish take to the court again tonight after a nine-day break with a game at IUPUI.

VA Hospital Van: To schedule a ride to the VA Hospital in Ft. Wayne, St. Joseph County veterans can call Doug Davis (USMC, retired) at (574) 243-VETS (8387).
The van service also provides connecting rides to the VA hospitals in Marion and Indianapolis.

IUSB Students Collect for Homeless: Thirteen clubs and organizations came together in spite of a winter storm this weekend to collect donations for the homeless.
Led by the Black Student Union, the students gathered non-perishable food items and toiletries. The items will be donated to the Center for the Homeless, YWCA, Hope Rescue Mission, and Northern Indiana Food Bank.

Huckabee, Guiliani Tied; Obama Narrows Gap: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has moved into a virtual tie with former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani in a Rueters/Zogby poll released today, 23%-22%.
Huckabee had been trailing Guiliani by 18 points a month ago.
Democrat front-runner Senator Hilary Clinton (D-N.Y.) saw her lead over Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.) narrowed from 11 to eight points.
Clinton had 40%, Obama 32%, former vice-presidential nominee John Edwards 13%, Joseph Biden and Bill Richardson 3%, Chris Dodd 1%.
On the GOP side, Mitt Romney had 16 %, Fred Thompson 13%, John McCain 12%, and Ron Paul 4%.
Obama led Clinton in the latest Iowa polls, 33%-29%, amounting to a virtual tie. Huckabee had 29%, Romney 24%, and Guiliani 13%.
The Iowa Caucuses are January 3.

Lee Apparent Winner in South Korea: Lee Myung Bak of the conservative Grand National Party is the apparent winner of South Korea’s presidential election.
With 62.9% of the votes counted, Lee outdistanced his nearest competitor, Chung Dong Young, 47.2%-27.3%.
Lee, a business executive, will take over from incumbent Roh Moo Hyun February 25.
Setback for President Mbeke: South Africa’s leading political party, the African National Congress, voted to replace President Thabo Mbeki as its head.
The win puts the new party chief, Jacob Zuma, in a commanding position to succeed Mbeke in 2009.

Dancing Angels Visit CFH: The CFH Monday night meeting received a visit from Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, shepherds, wise men, dancing angels dressed in white, and a choir. Conspicuously missing was a red-suited, jolly old elf.
The group was from the New Life Baptist Church in Osceola, led by Pastor Mike Cramer.
New Life’s Positive Faith Choir performed carols such as “White Christmas”, “Toyland”, “Silver Bells’, and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” along with more spiritual contemporary and traditional tunes. They were accompanied by a four-piece band that included New Life Music Coordinator Tammy Bilotta.
New Life Church members passed out candy canes to the children while Pastor Mike explained the spiritual meaning of the candy cane.
According to Pastor Mike, candy canes were developed by a Indiana candy maker. They are hard because God’s church is founded on the rock and white because of Jesus’ purity. The three small stripes represent the three persons of the Trinity. The red color also signifies the blood He shed. The cane is curved to represent a shepherd’s staff.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the live nativity scene with the above-mentioned characters and the choir singing “Oh Holy Night”.
Pastor Mike ended the visit with a message of “love, hope, and peace” with Matthew 19:26 as his text.

The Vikings (8-6) stayed in contention for a wild card spot despite committing four turnovers and missing an extra point.
Chicago’s Kyle Orton was 22-36 for 184 yards and one interception in his first start in two years.
IUSB Men 80, Brescia 65: Qdar Owens scored 20 points for the host Titans (8-6) as five IUSB players scored in double figures.
The others were: Ben Werner, 17; Tyler Leighton, 13; Dewey Brown, 11; and Terry Hill, 10.
The Titans visit Bethel’s Weikamp/Gates Gymnasium Wednesday at 7 p.m. to play the Pilots. Bethel won the earlier meeting at IUSB, 95-82.

Tiger donated his $1.35-million paycheck to the Tiger Woods Learning Center.
NCAA Division I-AA Championship; (5) Appalachian St. 49, (13) Delaware 21: Armanti Edwards passed for three touchdowns as the Mountaineers (13-2) jumped out to a 21-0 lead enroute to a third straight championship.
Delaware finished with a 11-4 mark.
NCAA Division II Championship; Valdosta St. 25, Northwest Missouri St. 20: Michael Terry scored on a 1-yard plunge with 22 seconds left for Valdosta State (13-1).
Willie Copeland completed four straight passes in the winning drive.
Northwest Missouri State finishes 12-2.
NCAA Division III Championship; Wisconsin-Whitewater 31, Mount Union 21: Wisconsin-Whitewater’s (14-1) Justin Beaver, who won the Gagliardi Trophy as the best player in Division III earlier in the week, rushed for 249 yards and a touchdown.
Beaver also had a 66-yard burst in the final minutes which helped run out the clock.
Mount Union (14-1) had its winning streak ended at 37 games. The Purple Raiders had defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater in the last two Division III title games.

NCAA Division I-AA Championship; (5) Appalachian St. 49, (13) Delaware 21: Armanti Edwards passed for three touchdowns as the Mountaineers (13-2) jumped out to a 21-0 lead enroute to a third straight championship.
Delaware finished with a 11-4 mark.
NCAA Division II Championship; Valdosta St. 25, Northwest Missouri St. 20: Michael Terry scored on a 1-yard plunge with 22 seconds left for Valdosta State (13-1).
Willie Copeland completed four straight passes in the winning drive.
Northwest Missouri State finishes 12-2.
NCAA Division III Championship; Wisconsin-Whitewater 31, Mount Union 21: Wisconsin-Whitewater’s (14-1) Justin Beaver, who won the Gagliardi Trophy as the best player in Division III earlier in the week, rushed for 249 yards and a touchdown.
Beaver also had a 66-yard burst in the final minutes which helped run out the clock.
Mount Union (14-1) had its winning streak ended at 37 games. The Purple Raiders had defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater in the last two Division III title games.

Love Kitchen Visits CFH: The Little Caesar’s Love Kitchen visited CFH for lunch Wednesday.
The mobile pizza kitchen cooked 50 fresh pies for CFH guests. It was the second visit here for the Love Kitchen.
The Love Kitchen, which travels to Elkhart next, has fed more than two-million people since 1985, including 9/11, Katrina, and the Oklahoma bombing victims.

Ike Turner, 76, Dies: Rock legend Ike Turner died Wednesday in his San Marcos home.
Turner had continued to make music and tour even though he was battling Emphysema. He won a 2007 Grammy in the Traditional Blues Album category for “Risin’ with the Blues”.
He is credited by rock historians with the first Rock ‘n’ Roll album, “Rocket 88”, in 1951.
He married Anna Mae Bullock in 1959 and the duo formed the “Ike and Tina Turner Review”. They produced a string of hits, including “A Fool in Love”, “I Idolize You”, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine”, “River Deep, Mountain High”, and “Proud Mary”.
Ike and Tina, who have been divorced for more 35 years, have two surviving sons.

The Crusaders were led by South Bend St. Joseph’s graduate Aimee Litka with a career-high 17 points. Valpo freshman Ashley Varner, who played on South Bend Washington’s state 4-A basketball champions, also saw action.
The Irish have a nine-day break. Their next game is December 21 in Indianapolis against IUPUI.

New Chief Programming Officer is No Stranger: Lani Vivirito, the new CFH Chief Programming Officer, is no stranger to Center guests.
Lani has worked at CFH for the last five years as a counselor with the Genesis program.
Lani assumed her new duties last Monday. Her office is on the second floor, next to the women/family living quarters.
As Chief Programming Officer, Lani will be overseeing coaching, education and job retention, housing/transition, and the Child Development Center.
The regulars in her Anger Management sessions should not be upset, according to Lani. Genesis will continue to run those in her absence. Times will be determined.
“I feel pretty good,” said Lani after one week in her new position. “I feel I have an advantage having been an agency partner the last five years.”
Lani, a licensed clinical social worker, received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her masters from the University of Chicago. She and her husband, Patrick, have a two-year-old daughter, Kyria.

Cubs Sign Japanese Outfielder: The Cubs have signed Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome to a four-year, $48-million contract.
Fukudome, considered one of the best outfielders in the Japanese leagues, hit 192 homers with a 305 average in 17 seasons with the Chunichi Drzgons
Fukudome is slated to play right field for Chicago with Alfonso Soriano in left and Felix Pie in center.
The Cubs had traded outfielder Jacque Jones and declined Cliff Floyd’s option.
Petrino Leaves Falcons for Arkansas: Head Coach Bobby Petrino is leaving the Atlanta Falcons for the University of Arkansas after only 13 games.
Petrino was 41-9 at the University of Louisville but was only 3-10 with the Falcons.

CFH Holiday Miracle Luncheon: Chris Gardner, Sr., and his son are both successful entrepreneurs today but when Chris, Jr., was two they both slept in homeless shelters or a train station restroom.
Chris, Sr., told of their homeless experience in his 2006 book “The Pursuit of Happyness” which was made into a movie starring Will Smith.
After completing his internship and working for Dean Witter, Chris, Sr., founded Gardner Rich and Co. in Chicago. He sold his stake in that company in a multi-million dollar deal. He is now the owner and CEO of Christopher Gardner International Holdings with offices in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. He has also given his time and money to help others who are in the same situation he was.
Chris, Jr., graduated from Whitney Young High School in Chicago and got his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. He is in the music and movie business. Chris, Jr., also has a sister, Jacintha, 20.
Chris, Jr., now 26, was the featured speaker at the CFH Holiday Miracle Luncheon yesterday. Before the luncheon he was given a tour of the center by Executive Director Steve Camilleri
Chris--who at 6-8, 230 pounts, is about a foot taller than Steve-- joked that he should produce a sequel to the Danny DeVito-Arnold Schwarzenegger move “Twins” with himself and Steve.
Chris, Jr., was a particular favorite of the CFH children.
“They must have thought I was Shrek,” said Chris.
Chris, Jr., said he was impressed by his tour.
“I’m so glad I got to visit the Center,” he said. “I wish my father and I had had a place like that.”
In answer to a commonly-asked question, Chris said that the movie was largely realistic, although it took some artistic liberties. For instance, Chris’s character—played by Will Smith’s son, Jaden--is five instead of two.
Chris said the scene where the pair slept in the bathroom was so realistic that his father had to excuse himself from the set.
Chris also said he didn’t remember being that small or that cute.
Chris stated that as a young entrepreneur he has had his share of setbacks.
“I know I wouldn’t change my experiences,” Chris said in closing. “They have made me into the man I am today.”

Andrew Bultas Recovering: Malloy Dorm Steward Andrew Bultas is recovering from his second knee replacement operation this year.
Andrew had the surgery on his left knee at Memorial Hospital Wednesday and was back at CFH by the weekend. Andrew’s right knee was replaced in May. He has to undergo six months of rehabilitation on each knee.

Fumes Caused Hazmat Call: Fumes from sealant applied to a concrete pad near the St. Joseph Medical Center, Mishawaka, emergency room caused some people to become ill yesterday.
A hazmat crew was called to the scene and critical patients were diverted to South Bend’s Memorial Hospital. The Mishawaka emergency room continued to take walk-in cases and reopened for all patients at 11 a.m.

Starting Over: The next Starting Over class will begin December 3 and will run six weeks because of the holidays.
All of the following activities count towards ABE hours.
▪Computer Classes: There will be two Basic Word classes on Fridays starting December 7: 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. Sign up in ABE.
▪ Academic Fun Fair: Starting December 3 in ABE.
There will be puzzles, games, interesting projects and exhibits. A new exhibit will be added every day for the first week of December.
Volunteers are needed to set up and work exhibits. See Andrea in ABE.

St. Joseph Med Center, Mishawaka Closed: Mishawaka’s St. Joseph Medical Center has been sealed off because of a hazardous material incident.
Streets have been blocked in the immediate area. Officials are unable to confirm what type of materials are involved.
No patients are being received at the facility; they are being diverted to Memorial Hospital until further notice.

Michigan’s Lloyd Carr Resigns: Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr resigned Monday after a disappointing season that included a loss to Appalachian State and the sixth loss in seven years at the hands of archrival Ohio State.
The biggest game in Carr’s 13-years at UM was the 1997 Rose Bowl victory which clinched the national championship.

ND Women to Face UNC: The Lady Irish (17-4-2) renew their NCAA Tournament rivalry with North Carolina (19-3-1) Saturday at Chapel Hill. Kickoff is at noon.
ND advanced in the tournament with a 2-0 win over Illinois.

Johnson Wins Cup: Jimmie Johnson finished seventh in the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to clinche a 77-point win over Jeff Gordon in the final Nextel Cup race. It was Johnson’s second consecutive Cup title.
Matt Kenseth won the race with Gordon finishing fourth. South Bend’s David Stremme and Ryan Newman were 11th and 18th, respectively. It was Stremme’s last race in the number 40 car.
The race marked the end of an era in NASCAR. Next year the Cup chase will be sponsored by Sprint and the Car of Tomorrow will be the the car of today.

It would take a miracle for former points leader Jeff Gordon to pass Johnson in the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway (3 p.m., ABC) Sunday and take the Cup.

The Colts placed Freeney on injured reserve Wednesday. He injured himself in the fourth quarter Sunday.

Former CFH Guest Dies: Former CFH guest Robert G. (Bob) Pueschel, 63, died Friday at Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Bob, a Vietnam veteran, is survived by a son and daughter. There will be no memorial service or visitation.

Fire Damages Home: South Bend firefighters were called out at 1:30 a.m. this morning to battle a house fire in the 300 block of Hamden Ct. off of LaSalle St. west of downtown.
Fire department officials say no one was home; they were able to rescue a dog.
The SBFD also responded to a 8 a.m. building fire at Jefferson and Walnut this morning.

Municipal Elections: The issue was never in doubt in South Bend as Mayor Steve Luecke (D) beat Republican challenger Juan Manigualt with 62% of the vote. Luecke is the longest-serving Mayor of South Bend with 11 years in office.
In Mishawaka Mayor Jeff Rea (R) survived a last-minute negative ad campaign to defeat Penn Twp. Trustee Mike Hayes (D) with 53% of the vote.
Plymouth Mayor Gary Cook (D) lost his bid for reelection to fellow police officer Mark Senter (R).
Other mayoral winners: Elkhart, Democrat Dick Moore; Goshen, Democratic incumbent Allan Kauffman; Warsaw, Republican Ernest Wiggins; Knox, Democrat Rick Chambers; Rochester, Republican Mark Smiley.
South Bend City Council members will be: Democrats Karen White, Al Kirsits, Tim Rouse, Derek Dieter, Henry Davis, Tom LaFountain, Ann Puzzello, Oliver Davis, and Republican David Varner.
Mishawaka City Council winners: Democrats Dale Emmons, Ross Deal (five-vote margin), Mike Compton, Ron Banicki, John Gleissner, Gregg Hixenbaugh, and John Roggeman, Republicans Dave Wood and Marsha McClure.
South Bend’s John Voorde (D) and Mishawaka’s Debbie Ladyga-Block (D) were unopposed in City Clerk races.
