NASCAR

Johnson in Commanding Position:
It took Jimmy Johnson one month and four straight wins to transform a 68-point deficit in the Nextel Cup points standings into a 86-point lead.
It would take a miracle for former points leader Jeff Gordon to pass Johnson in the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway (3 p.m., ABC) Sunday and take the Cup.

NFL

Colts Lose Freeney:
Indianapolis lost three-time Pro Bowl defensive Dwight Freeney in Sunday’s defeat at San Diego.
The Colts placed Freeney on injured reserve Wednesday. He injured himself in the fourth quarter Sunday.
The Colts, who began the Charger game without seven starters, lost four more Sunday.
To help make up for Freeney’s loss Indy claimed two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Simeon Rice off waivers from Denver. Rice played for Indy coach Tony Dungy at Tampa Bay.
Ricky Williams Reinstated: Running back Ricky Williams was reinstated by the NFL Wednesday after serving a 1 ½ -year suspension for violating the league’s subustance abuse policy.
The coach of the winless Miami Dolphins, Cam Cameron, didn’t say whether he wanted Williams back.
