Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

From Dr. Seuss to Presidential Politics: Since we talked about Dr. Seuss yesterday we’ll switch to something really nonsensical today: the presidential race.
The major wire services have picked up the rumors that Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine is the winner in the Democratic veep sweepstakes. The rumor was announced yesterday in something called the Politico Website. I don’t know how authoritative a source that is; I’ve never heard of it.
If the Virginia governor is Barack Obama’s pick, that means the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has taken part of my advice. I advised him to select a former beltway lieutenant governor, Maryland’s Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who lost her governor’s race.
It’s ironic that she’s the only one of Joseph P. Kennedy I’s children or grandchildren to lose a political race; she’s also one of the few members of that family to keep herself free of scandal. You could say she is to the Kennedy family what Elizabeth is to the Windsor family. If Kathleen has been involved in scandalous behavior, at least she has been discreet about it. That in itself is an accomplish with the scrutiny her family is under.
The choice of Kennedy-Townsend would have also offered an olive branch to the Hillary Clinton camp since the former lieutenant governor was almost the only member of her extended family not to support Obama.
Kaine does have the support of Clinton campaign manager Terry McCauliffe, who said the Virginia governor would be the best Democratic veep pick.
Maryland and Virginia are both swing states that have elected Democratic and Republican governors in the past decade.
If this was an ideal world, I still say McCain’s choice would be a no-brainer: Condoleeza Rice. Who else has her experience dealing with Congress and world leaders?
If not Rice, my next choice would be J.C. Watts. The former college and CFL quarterback and U.S. Representative from Oklahoma has stayed busy finding and recruiting Republican candidates for local elections. Watts is still relatively young and he is one of the outstanding speakers in the Republican Party.
To those who say picking a candidate to achieve racial or gender balance is cynical I answer that politics is a cynical business. It’s no more cynical than picking a candidate to achieve regional balance. Why not just pick the best available candidate?

Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Things Better Left Unsaid: I hope the rumors are untrue, but if some of you are pestering Jennifer in the kitchen about cooking green eggs and ham you need to stop it.
She is a sous chef, not a Seuss chef.
I’m not even sure what a Seuss chef would look like. If any of you out there are artistically—and Seusically—inclined perhaps you could sketch your rendition of one and send it to the Herald for publication. Make it the width of this column so it will fit.
Gardens Blooming: The plants in the north lot and planters are blooming nicely thanks to the hard work of Emily Pickerell and her volunteers.
I wonder if she’d mind if I borrowed some herbs from her. My clock battery is wearing out and I want to be prepared if someone asks me for the time (thyme).

Obama and Kaine are reportedly in serious talks about the job.

Tsvangirai did not get enough votes to claim outright victory and pulled out of a scheduled runoff after Mugabe’s supporters used violence, intimidation, and censorship. A Zimbabwean freelance journalist was beaten severely and jailed

Silver Hawks Lose Another Midwest League All-Star: Another Midwest League All-Star has been promoted to Visalia of the California League. First baseman/outfielder Mike Mee was hitting .299 for the Hawks.

Last week center fielder Evan Frey, the Hawks leading hitter, made the jump to Visalia. His roster spot was taken by outfielder Joseph “JoJo” Batten.

Outfielder Collin Cowgill, drafted by the Diamondbacks in the fifth round this year from the University of Kentucky, is joining the Hawks.

The Hawks were idle last night. The Quad City River Bandits visit the Cove the rest of the week; game time tonight is 7 p.m. with an afternoon game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

Uncle Ron’s MLB Roundup: The Cubs countered the Brewers’ acquisition of CC Sabathia by obtaining RHP Rich Harden from the A’s in a 6-player deal.

The Cubs get Harden—who is 5-1 in 13 games this season with a 2.34 ERA—and RHP Chad Gaudin—who pitched for Lou Piniella at Tampa Bay.

The A’s get pitcher Sean Gallagher, Matt Murton, Eric Patterson, and Josh Donaldson.

Sabathia gave up five hits and two earned runs in six innings in his National League debut but he still got the win as the Brewers remained four games behind the Cubs.

Rick Dempster improved his record to 10-0 at home as the Cubs remained 3.5 games ahead of the second place Cardinals. Mike Fontenot and Geovany Soto (16) homered for the Cubs. Dempster and Harden are both from British Columbia.

The Cubs can now match the Brewers’ rotation of Ben Sheets and Sabathia with Carlos Zambrano, Dempster, and Harden. The Cubs also still have some promising young mound prospects even with the trade of Gallagher.

The White Sox increased their lead in the AL Central to 2.5 games with the help of a Red Sox win over the Twins. The Red Sox closed the gap in the East to 3 games as the Rays lost their second in a row after a seven-game streak.

The Angels lost, but still maintain a five game lead in the AL West and a 54-36 record—which matches the Cubs.

The Phillies lead the Marlins in the NL East by 1.5 games and the Diamondbacks are the only NL West team at or above .500 with a 45-45 record. The D’Backs lead the Dodgers by one game.

MLB NL: Cubs 7, Reds 3; Pirates 4, Asros 3; Cardinals 2, Phillies 0; Mets 7, Giants 0; Diamondbacks 2, Nationals 0; Brewers 7, Rockies 3; Padres 10, Marlins 1; Braves 9, Dodgers 3.

MLB AL: White Sox 11, Royals 9; Red Sox 6, Twins 5; Yankees 5, Rays 0; Tigers 9, Indians 2; Blue Jays 7, Orioles 6; Rangers 3, Angels 2; Athletics 2, Mariners 0.

.Uncle Ron’s WNBA Roundup: Diana Taurasi reached 3,000 career points in fewer games than any WNBA player with a 30-point effort last night for the Mercury ((9-9).

Tina Thompson led the Comets (9-10) with 23 points.

The Mystics (7-11) outscored the Fever (9-9) 20-8 in the fourth quarter to pull out their win.

The Shock took a ½ game lead over the Sun in the Eastern Conference with their 4-point win.

The Storm (12-7) are the only team in Seattle now that the former Sonics have left for Oklahoma City. The Sonics do still exist on paper as Seattle kept the rights to the Sonics’ name and logo.

Sue Bird led the Storm in their win over the Monarchs (8-11) with 16 points, five rebounds, and nine assists.

Good news and bad news for former Notre Dame All-American Ruth Riley. Her Silver Star team (13-6) has the best record in the Western Conference but she has had to accept a backup role to Ann Wauters at center. Wauters scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Stars win over the Liberty (9-9) last night. Riley had no points and one board in 15 minutes.

Silver Hawks 6, Wizards 0: South Bend’s second batter Taylor Harbin drove in newcomer Joseph Batten with a home run to give the host Silver Hawks an early lead they never relinquished.

Batten was trying to fill the void left by the promotion of South Bend’s leading hitter, Evan Frey. Playing in Frey’s old center field position, Batten had three hits and three runs, including the lead-off single.

Harbin had one other hit. Matthew Oxendine had two hits and one run.

Hawk starter Tom Layne (3-2, 2.89) allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out two to get the win. Bryan Henry pitched two perfect innings in relief of Layne with two strikeouts.

South Bend maintained a one-game lead over Lansing and a three-game margin over third place West Michigan.

The Hawks finally have a night off tonight. The Quad City River Bandits come to the Cove tomorrow night; game time is 7 p.m. with an afternoon game Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Uncle Ron’s MLB Roundup: The race in the National League Central Division has gotten tougher for the Cubs with the Brewers’ acquisition of pitcher CC Sabathia from the Indians.

The Brewers traded four prospects to the Indians for the reigning AL Cy Young winner. Sabathia and Ben Sheets give Milwaukee a powerful one-two punch to go with their offense led by Prince Fielder.

The Brewers are currently four games behind the Cubs and ½ game behind the Cardinals.

The Rays finally had their winning streak snapped at seven. During the skein, they went from trailing the Red Sox by two games to leading them by five games. Tampa Bay still holds a four-game lead over Boston in the AL East. The streak included series sweeps of the then AL Central leading Red Sox and the NL Central leading Cubs.

The White Sox are still doing what they need to bring about the first Windy City World Series in more than 100 years. They lead the Twins by 1.5 games. The Red Sox helped the Pale Hose by cooling off the Twins.

Fans in Florida are hoping for a Sunshine State World Series. Not only do the Rays have the best record in baseball, the Marlins trail the Phillies by only 1.5 games in the NL East. Even if that doesn’t happen, Florida has still hosted (and won) more Fall Classics than Chicago since the birth of the Rays (formerly Devil Rays) and Marlins. It would be the first Series for the Rays.

The Angels are threatening to run away with the AL West, leading the A’s by six games. The Dodgers could join them in the first City of the Angels World Series due to their weak division. No one in the NL West has a record above .500. MLB NL: Mets 10, Phillies 9; Pirates 10, Astros 7; Rockies 4, Brewers 3; Marlins 3, Padres 1; Dodgers 3, Braves 0.

MLB AL: Red Sox 1, Twins 0; Royals 7, Rays 4; Angels 9, Rangers 6; Athletics 4, Mariners 3.

Bozos of the World Lose a Role Model: Larry Harmon, 83--who turned Bozo the Clown into a national franchise—died last Thursday in Los Angeles.

Harmon was not the first Bozo. The characters began in 1946 on a cartoon series with an actor named Vance Pinto Colvig doing the voice. Harmon took over in 1956, organized a group to buy the rights, and gave Bozo a makeover which included the sixe 83AAA shoes and flaming red wig.

Harmon trained Bozos and franchised the character to TV stations across the country, including WGN in Chicago which could be picked up locally.

He also took Vice-President George H.W. Bush to task during the laters’ 1988 presidential campaign for erroneously calling someone a bozo. The correct definition of a “bozo” is a clown or hobo, not an idiot.

Silver Hawks 4, Lugnuts 0; Silver Hawks 2, Lugnuts 0; Wizards 6, Silver Hawks 1: The Silver Hawks won a series against the Lansing Lugnuts for the first time this season. South Bend leads second-place Lansing by one game in the second half-season.

Joshua Collmenter (9-4, 3.25) pitched seven innings of no-hit ball July 4 against the Lugnuts. He struck out seven and walked one. There are strict pitch count rules in the Midwest League, so Collmenter still had to come out with the no-hitter and the lead. He did get the win.

South Bend center fielder and Midwest League All-Star Evan Frey has been promoted to the Class A Advanced California League Visalia Oaks team. Frey was leading the Hawks with a .327 average and 101 hits.
