Local

Police Investigators Fired At: South Bend Police Cpl. Michael Norby and members of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit were shot at while inspecting the scene of a fatal shooting on South Bend’s west side.

The detectives were checking out the area behind Wade’s Unique Car Wash in the 1800 block of Lincolnway West where Harold Parks, 28, was fatally shot Saturday night.

The shots went over the officers’ heads. Norby and another officer gave chase, but couldn’t find a suspect.

It has been little more than a year since Norby was shot in the arm and Cpl. Nick Polizzotto was fatally shot at the Wooden Indiana Motel.

It was a violent holiday weekend in South Bend. Five people were shot and one person stabbed.

Silver Hawks 6, Wizards 0: South Bend’s second batter Taylor Harbin drove in newcomer Joseph Batten with a home run to give the host Silver Hawks an early lead they never relinquished.

Batten was trying to fill the void left by the promotion of South Bend’s leading hitter, Evan Frey. Playing in Frey’s old center field position, Batten had three hits and three runs, including the lead-off single.

Harbin had one other hit. Matthew Oxendine had two hits and one run.

Hawk starter Tom Layne (3-2, 2.89) allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out two to get the win. Bryan Henry pitched two perfect innings in relief of Layne with two strikeouts.

South Bend maintained a one-game lead over Lansing and a three-game margin over third place West Michigan.

The Hawks finally have a night off tonight. The Quad City River Bandits come to the Cove tomorrow night; game time is 7 p.m. with an afternoon game Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Uncle Ron’s MLB Roundup: The race in the National League Central Division has gotten tougher for the Cubs with the Brewers’ acquisition of pitcher CC Sabathia from the Indians.

The Brewers traded four prospects to the Indians for the reigning AL Cy Young winner. Sabathia and Ben Sheets give Milwaukee a powerful one-two punch to go with their offense led by Prince Fielder.

The Brewers are currently four games behind the Cubs and ½ game behind the Cardinals.

The Rays finally had their winning streak snapped at seven. During the skein, they went from trailing the Red Sox by two games to leading them by five games. Tampa Bay still holds a four-game lead over Boston in the AL East. The streak included series sweeps of the then AL Central leading Red Sox and the NL Central leading Cubs.

The White Sox are still doing what they need to bring about the first Windy City World Series in more than 100 years. They lead the Twins by 1.5 games. The Red Sox helped the Pale Hose by cooling off the Twins.

Fans in Florida are hoping for a Sunshine State World Series. Not only do the Rays have the best record in baseball, the Marlins trail the Phillies by only 1.5 games in the NL East. Even if that doesn’t happen, Florida has still hosted (and won) more Fall Classics than Chicago since the birth of the Rays (formerly Devil Rays) and Marlins. It would be the first Series for the Rays.

The Angels are threatening to run away with the AL West, leading the A’s by six games. The Dodgers could join them in the first City of the Angels World Series due to their weak division. No one in the NL West has a record above .500. MLB NL: Mets 10, Phillies 9; Pirates 10, Astros 7; Rockies 4, Brewers 3; Marlins 3, Padres 1; Dodgers 3, Braves 0.

MLB AL: Red Sox 1, Twins 0; Royals 7, Rays 4; Angels 9, Rangers 6; Athletics 4, Mariners 3.

MLS Scores: No games scheduled. .

WNBA Scores: No games scheduled.

Bozos of the World Lose a Role Model: Larry Harmon, 83--who turned Bozo the Clown into a national franchise—died last Thursday in Los Angeles.

Harmon was not the first Bozo. The characters began in 1946 on a cartoon series with an actor named Vance Pinto Colvig doing the voice. Harmon took over in 1956, organized a group to buy the rights, and gave Bozo a makeover which included the sixe 83AAA shoes and flaming red wig.

Harmon trained Bozos and franchised the character to TV stations across the country, including WGN in Chicago which could be picked up locally.

He also took Vice-President George H.W. Bush to task during the laters’ 1988 presidential campaign for erroneously calling someone a bozo. The correct definition of a “bozo” is a clown or hobo, not an idiot.
