Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Things Better Left Unsaid: I hope the rumors are untrue, but if some of you are pestering Jennifer in the kitchen about cooking green eggs and ham you need to stop it.
She is a sous chef, not a Seuss chef.
I’m not even sure what a Seuss chef would look like. If any of you out there are artistically—and Seusically—inclined perhaps you could sketch your rendition of one and send it to the Herald for publication. Make it the width of this column so it will fit.
Gardens Blooming: The plants in the north lot and planters are blooming nicely thanks to the hard work of Emily Pickerell and her volunteers.
I wonder if she’d mind if I borrowed some herbs from her. My clock battery is wearing out and I want to be prepared if someone asks me for the time (thyme).

Local

Local Athlete Swims Channel: Penn High graduate Clara Bennett successfully completed her swim across the English Channel this weekend.
Bennett’s friend, Plymouth native Mallory (Cook) Mead, 22, completed her swim Saturday. They each served on the support boat for the other’s swim.
Mallory and Clara are both former teammates on the Penn Aquatics Club.
For more details on the Channel swims, see Bill Moor’s column in the South Bend Tribune.
Six Shot on West Side Porch: Four girls and two boys under the age of 18 were wounded as a passer-by opened up on them with a shotgun Sunday.
All six were treated for removal of buckshot.

Nation/World

Thai-Cambodian Forces in Stare-Down: Thai and Cambodian forces continued to face off along a disputed border area after Thai troops occupied a patch of land near the ancient Preah Vihear Temple.
Officials on both sides are trying to reach a peaceful resolution to the situation.
Church Gunman Apparently Disapproved of Liberal Teachings: A man who opened fire with a shotgun at a church children’s pageant Sunday apparently disagreed with the congregation’s liberal teachings.
The man killed two people and wounded seven during the pageant based on the play “Annie.”
There were about 200 people in the Tennesse Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville at the time of the attack.
The gunman was tackled by church members and eventually taken into police custody.
Virginia Governor Said To Top Obama’s Short List: According to the Politico Website, Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine is at the top of Barack Obama’s short list of potential running mates.
The site says Kaine is also the top choice of Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager Terry McCauliffe, who said the Virginia governor would be the best pick to fill out the Democratic veep spot.
Obama and Kaine are reportedly in serious talks about the job.
Zimbabwe Talks Continue: Talks continue in Pretoria, South Africa, between opposing sides in the aftermath of Zimbabwe’s recent elections.
The only statement coming out amidst a news blackout came from President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF, insisting the negotiations will not lead to MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) rule.
MDC won control of Zimbabwe’s parliament and its presidential candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai outpolled Mugabe in the general election.
Tsvangirai did not get enough votes to claim outright victory and pulled out of a scheduled runoff after Mugabe’s supporters used violence, intimidation, and censorship. A Zimbabwean freelance journalist was beaten severely and jailed
