Nepal Abolishes Monarchy: Nepal’s national assembly voted Wednesday to abolishes the monarchy which has ruled over the Himalayan nation for 239 years.

Deposed King Gyanendra has 15 days to quit the 1970s-era palace or risk being removed by force.

Nepal’s monarchs were once revered as descendants of gods, but the popularity of the monarchy had plummeted after Gyanendra’s brother, King Birendra, and other members of the royal family were slain at a palace gathering. Gyanendra was rumored to be involved in the slayings.

Gyanendra also lost popularity when he seized power from a civilian government in 2005, saying he needed total authority to crush Maoist insurgents.

The monarch6y’s days appeared numbered when the Maoists won the most seats in recent national assembly election.

The newly-seated lawmakers are still wrangling over who should be president and what powers he should have.

Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Advice For Sen. McCain: Since I gave advice on picking a running mate to presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama yesterday, it’s only fair that I give equal time to Republican John McCain.

McCain is hosting a “gathering” at his Arizona ranch this weekend. The reported guest list includes: Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Connecticut independent Senator Joe Lieberman, and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham.

The McCain headquarters claims this is just a get-together with friends and colleagues.

If it is a gathering of possible vice-presidential candidates, one name conspicuously absent from the list is that of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.

At least one pundit has said that it would be a cynical move to put the Secretary on the ticket. Actually, it would be cynical to reject someone with her experience simply because it might be interpreted as cynical. Politics, after all, is a cynical business and nobody knows that more than McCain, the veteran senator from Arizona.

West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, former Ku Klux Klan (Tip O’Neil reportedly called him “Sheets”) member and opponent of civil rights legislation, recently endorsed the candidacy of Barack Obama. Has the 90-year-old senator truly had a change of heart or is he an astute politician.

The question is: Would the addition of Rice to the ticket help McCain’s chances in the general election or would it alienate a core Republican constituency?

No African-American Republican has won a general election at the state level. African-Americans won the gubernatorial primaries in Ohio, Pennsylvania (former Pittsburgh Steeler star Lynn Swan) and Maryland in the last election but were soundly defeated in the general election

Uncle Ron’s Ramblings

Advice For Sen. Obama: If Barack Obama were to solicit my advice on a running mate—and it’s doubtful he will—I would suggest that he put these four names on his short list: Michigan Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin and Governor Jennifer Grandholm plus Florida Senator Bill Nelson.

The latter should probably be at the top of the list. Experts have obsessed in the last week over the fact that no recent Democratic nominee has won the White House without West Virginia and Kentucky in his column. Florida has twice the electoral votes of West Virginia and Kentucky combined (Florida 27, Kentucky 8, West Virginia 5) and it has been crucial in the Democrat’s last two presidential defeats.

Florida and Michigan combined have 44 electoral votes. Democrats really need to make peace with voters in those two states. The voters weren’t the ones who violated party rules by moving their primaries ahead to January; they voted, which is their right.

Democrats have carried Michigan (17 electoral votes) in the last two elections but they don’t want to take the Wolverine state for granted. It could go either way; Grandholm’s predecessor was a Republican.

The obvious advantage of picking Stabenow or Grandholm is that they are both women, but that’s not the only one. Stabenow has as much time in Washington as Obama and Grandholm has executive experience with her two terms as Michigan’s governor, something that Obama lacks.

The advantage of picking Levin is that he has more experience than Stabenow, Grandholm or Obama.

Sen. Kennedy Home From Hospital: Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy has returned home from the hospital after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

The senator will stay at his Cape Cod home while doctors await further test results and try to determine treatment plans.

Kennedy’s tumor is a malignant glioma in his left parietal lobe, an area of the brain involved in speech. According to medical experts, surgery is not an option because of the location of the tumor. A glioma is a type of tumor that kills half its victims within a year.

The most common treatment of a glioma, through the years, has been radiation therapy. There are other treatments, including the development of vaccines or immunotherapy, that are being studied at various cancer centers across the country to help the immune system turn around and fight against the tumor cells.
