Election 2008

Donnelly Endorses Obama: U.S. Representative Joe Donnelly endorsed Barack Obama for president Tuesday, extending Obama’s lead among the state’s superdelegates even though Hillary Clinton narrowly won the Indiana primary last week.

Donnelly’s decision gives Obama the support of six superdelegates from Indiana, while Clinton is being backed by Senator Evan Bayh and three other superdelegates. Clinton won 38 and Obama 34 pledged delegates in last week’s Indiana primary, according to unofficial calculations by the Associated Press.

Donnelly, who is seeking re-election to his second term in Congress, said his backing of Obama was not a call for Clinton to give up her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“Sen. Clinton is a tenacious fighter for the
American people, and particularly for working families, but I believe Barack Obama is the president that we need at this moment in history,” he said.

Two Indiana superdelegates—Reps. Peter Visclosky and Brad Ellsworth—remain uncommitted.

Hillary Wins in West Virginia: Hillary Clinton’s struggling candidacy got a big boost in West Virginia with a 67%-26% victory over Barack Obama..

John Edwards got 7% of the vote even though he is no longer in the race.

No Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without carrying West Virginia. Hillary’s husband, Bill, carried the state in 1992 and 1996. Al Gore and John Kerry failed to win there in 2000 and 2004, respectively.

Hillary Clinton still has an uphill battle to win the nomination. Obama needs only 150 delegates to reach the 2,025 needed.

The Democratic party got some good news from a Quinnipiac University Polling Institute national poll which showed Obama leading John McCain 47-40 and Clinton up 46-41 over the Arizona Republican.

China Quake Toll Nears 15,000: The death toll from China’s strongest earthquake in more than half a century has risen to almost 15,000 as disaster officials, battling bad weather and rubble-strewn roads, try to reach 25,000 people trapped under debris.

About 100,000 relief workers—including soldiers, police, and medical teams—are working in the affected areas, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said on state television.

The 7.9-magnitude quake has left an estimated 64,746 people injured in Sichuan Province, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Three-quarters of the 10,000 residents of Yingxiu town in Wenchuan County died in the quake, Xinhua said. In Mianyang, a city of more than 5-million west of Wenchuan, more than 18,000 people are estimated to be buried.
