Announcements

Running Club Members To Meet: Jeff Rowe, the volunteer who is organizing the running club for CFH guests, plans to meet with all those interested in this program on Thursday, May 15, at 5:30 p.m., in the CPC building’s community room.

If you are interested in this program and have not yet signed up, please leave your name for Peter Lombardo at the front desk—and arrange to be at the meeting next Thursday.

Vehicle Registration for CFH Guests: If you have a vehicle (bike or automobile), you need to register it.

Cars can be registered at the front desk. They could be towed away if not registered.

There are bike registration sheets on the basement door by the men’s lounge.

. ▪GED Commencement: The official South Bend Community School Corporation GED Commencement Ceremony will be May 15. ABE will be closed for this event.

▪Computers: Beginning—Fridays, 10:30 a.m.-noon, starts May 9.

Intermediate Computing—Fridays, 1-2:30 p.m., starts May 16.

▪Math Seminar Series: Mondays, 3-4 p.m., SOSH room.

▪Math Study Session: Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m., SOSH room.

▪GED Essay Writing Class: Are you working on your GED? Do you need to write an essay or refine your writing skills? Then join us for the Essay Class, Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m.

▪Submit Your Poem: If you like to write poetry in your free time, this is your chance to be a published author! Submit a poem to any staff member in the ABE room and it may be published in the next ABE Newsletter. Also, we will hopefully start another Poetry Jam in the Fall; let us know if you are interested

The Write Stuff: Are you the only person who can read your handwriting? Come join us on Tuesday afternoons from 2-3 p.m. to learn writing that will look great on job applications, love letters, and everything else. Class starts May 6. Sign up in ABE.

Dead Poets Society: Thursdays, 3-4 p.m., ABE Room. All are welcome.

We will discuss short stories and poems.

Silver Hawks Take Three From Wizards: The Silver Hawks (13-20) continued to have success at the Cove; they won three games out a scheduled four-game series from Ft. Wayne by scores of 6-5, 2-0, and 4-3. Sunday’s game was rained out.

The Hawks travel to Midland, MI. to begin a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons. Tonight’s game starts at 7:05 p.m. They have three more games next weekend against Ft. Wayne at the Wizards’ home park.

Dixon Wins Indy Pole: Scott Dixon captured the pole position for the Indianapolis Saturday with a top four-lap speed of 226.366.

Dixon’s teammate Dan Wheldon took the second spot. New Zealander Ryan Briscoe rounds out the front row.

Kyle Busch Wins at Darlington: Kyle Busch solidified his hold on the Sprint Cup points lead with a win in the Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Saturday.

Busch led 169 of the 367 laps and finished nearly four seconds ahead of Carl Edwards to post his third Sprint Cup victory and seventh of his career. He had to overcome brake issues, loose lug nuts, and several scrapes against the wall—he couldn’t remember how many.

South Bend’s Ryan Newman dropped out of the top 12 in the Sprint Cup standings with a 37th place finish. He was two laps down after a penalty, got one lap back, and was hit by Brian Vickers car coming in to the pits on lap 239. He dropped to the 13th spot, 426 points behind Busch.

Country Legend Eddy Arnold Dies: Country music legend Eddy Arnold died Thursday, days short of his 89th birthday and less than two months after the passing of his wife of 66 years, Sally.

Arnold was one of the top-selling country artists of all time with 145 songs on the country chart and 28 number one hits. He recorded his first number one song, “It’s a Sin,” in 1947.

Some of his other hits include: “Make the World Go Away,” “Bouquet of Roses,” “Cattle Call,” “The Last Word in Lonesome is Me,” “Anytime,” “What’s He Doing in My World,” “I Want to Go With You,” “Somebody Like Me,” “Lonely Again,” and “Turn the World Around.” “Make the World Go Away” was number one on the country chart and in the top 10 on the pop charts.

Thousands Killed in China Earthquake: Thousands of people were killed in a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Chengdu, China. The quake, China’s strongest in 58 years, caused buildings to shake 930 miles away in Beijing.

One heavily-populated county suffered 3,000-5,000 deaths, according to China state media.

A Sichuan high school building reportedly collapsed and may have buried as many as 900 students in a mudslide.

Parvati Beats Amanda in “Survivor”: Parvati Shallow won the one-million dollar prize on Sunday night’s final episode of “Survivor: Micronesia”, beating out her friend Amanda Kimmel. It was the second time Amanda had made it to the finals and failed to win.
