Director/Hoosier Native Sydney Pollack Dies: Director-producer (and occasional actor) Sydney Pollack, 73—a Lafayette native and South Bend Central High School graduate—died Monday of cancer.

His movies include: “Out of Africa,” “Tootsie,” “Three Days of the Condor,” “Jeremiah Johnson,” “The Firm,” “Absence of Malice” and “The Way We Were.” Among his acting roles was Dustin Hoffman’s agent in “Tootsie.”

In the mid-1980’s, he formed Mirage Productions which produced “Sense and Sensibility,” “Sliding Doors,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,”, “Cold Mountain” and “Michael Clayton.”

Pollock’s last screen appearance was as the father of Patrick Dempsey’s character in “Made of Honor,” currently playing in theaters.

Four Construction Workers Injured at New Hospital Site: Four construction workers were injured Tuesday afternoon when they fell off a parking garage at the new St. Joseph Medical Center site on Douglas Road.

The four men, working for subcontractor H.G. Christman, were pouring slab for the garage when they fell 17 feet through decking to the ground.

One of the men declined treatment. The other three were treated and released at the hospital Tuesday.

Autopsy Shows No Signs of Trauma in Death of Pair: Preliminary autopsy results show no outward signs of trauma in the deaths of 30-year-old Chris Triest and 21-year-old Jeanette Masterson.

Their bodies were found Sunday morning in Triest’s home in the 24000 block of Grant Road.

The Metro Homicide Unit continues to investigate, but the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office says there is no evidence to suggest the deaths were homicides or a murder-suicide.

Trial Begins for 74-Year-Old: The trial of a 74-year-old South Bend man accused of shooting at police began yesterday.

Jerome Osborn is accused of exchanging gunfire with two South Bend Police officers outside his South Michigan Street home March 25, 2007. He claims he didn’t know the two were police officers.

Burmese Opposition Leader Detention Extended: Myanmar’s (Burma) ruling junta extended the house arrest of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi Tuesday for one year.

Suu Kyi has been in detention for most of the last 18 years, since her National League for Democracy party won a 1990 general election.

Police also arrested 20 NLD party members who were protesting Suu Kyi’s detention.

The Myanmar government has been trying to deal with the aftermath of the recent cyclones which ravaged the Irawaddy Delta region of the country.

Cyclone Nargis left 1.5-million people homeless in Myanmar and 133,00 dead or missing.

Relief workers are still having trouble getting aid to the survivors.
