New Coach on Job

By Ron Garrett, Herald Editor

Yani Horn, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, is the newest member of the coaching staff at the Center for the Homeless. Yani has been in the United States for six months. Her husband, Paul, a Notre Dame graduate, is the Director of Communication at the Center for Social Concerns at ND. The two met when Paul was on a one-year volunteer program in South Africa. He wound up staying for nine years. Yani completed her undergraduate studies in Health Sciences and Social Services at the University of Johannesburg and the University of South Africa. She worked at the Kgosi Neighborhood Foundation in Johannesburg. One of her main focuses there was getting children ready for school. There are no free public schools in South Africa. Yani worked at the Notre Dame Early Childhood Development Center before coming to the Center. She has been on the job here since February 1. "I'm still learning," she said. "This is a great place. I really like it here. Everybody has been so welcoming. There are so many different, unique people here."

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

I think a raise in the minimum is long overdue. You can only exist working a minimum wage job at the current rate. I just wonder how many pay raises has Congress voted itself since the last increase in the minimum wage and used the cost of living as justification for their increase. If the people could control political wage increases, would we hear them whining about how difficult it is to make ends meet? Maybe politicians should walk a mile in our shoes.

Hoosiers Rule at Daytona

By Ron Garrett
Herald Editor

Hoosiers rule at this year’s Daytona 500 with five Indiana drivers in the starting field.
Former Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart (20 Chevrolet) leads the Hoosier contingent, qualifying in third place. Stewart is looking for his first Daytona win.
Former Dayton winner and Cup champion Jeff Gordon won the second 150-mmile qualifying race but was moved from fourth to 42d in the starting field. His car failed a post-race inspection; it was too low.
Northern Indiana drivers in the field are: South Bend’s David Stremme (40 Dodge), South Bend’s Ryan Newman (12 Dodge), and LaPorte’s Tony Raines (96) Chevrolet.
There will be a race party in the Center dining room with munchies. Put your name on the sign-up sheet at the front desk so the organizers will know how much food and drink to buy.

Ask Aunt Rona

Dear Aunt Rona:

My new girlfriend and I were getting along fine until she started laying down the law. For instance, she can be late for a date—that’s fine—but I’d better be on time. And I don’t mind showing her a squeezin’, pleasin’, teasin’ kind of time, but she also expects me to walk the line. Who does she think I am, Johnny Cash?

Wondering if women are worth it.

It sounds like a cliché, but everybody who got up on the stage was a winner at Monday night’s Center Idol competition (with the possible exception of Meg and Juanetta).
The term “competition” is a misnomer since no actual “Center Idol” was crowned although Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson were there. Well, actually, their stand-ins were there: Greg Below (Simon), Mickey Anderson (Paula), and Jone (Randy).
Tyshawn Price, already a seasoned performer at age
12, got the biggest ovation of the night with his rendition of “Wade in the Water”.
Mark (aka “Bobby Hill”, aka “Streetwise”) Bogunia got the show rolling. He showed surprising agility with his “Dance Revolution”.
Ken Clay kept things jumping, singing “Reason” by Earth, Wind and Fire.
The low point of the evening was a burlesque-style number by Meg and Juanetta to the tune of “Cecelia”.
Tania Hensen’s children, Angeleck, 5, and Christian, 4, got things back on a positive track with solo numbers.
“I feel clean again,” said host Ryan Secrest (aka Andrew Hoyt).
Tania’s older children, Lexus, 9, and Jenia, 7, also did solos.
Steve Baney did an original dramatic reading, Kari Price sang “Amazing Grace”, and Malik Bladen performed an original gospel number that he wrote.
Andrew, reassuming his own identity, said that he would like to do another “Idol” next month.
Greg, speaking for himself and not Simon, said, “I would like to see more adults out there. You don’t have to be a professional. We’re all friends here.”
Once again, it’s a cliché, but there were no losers Monday, only winners (even Meg and Juanetta).

There are two newborns here at the Center.
Jada, daughter of Lakisha Freeman, ws born February 12.
Tyjere, daughter of Tasha Anderson, was born February 13.
