U.S. Missiles Strike Home in Somalia (VOA):
At. Least two U.S. missiles have struck a home in Southern Somalia, in what the U.S. military is calling a attack against “known terrorists.”
U.S. military officials say Monday’s attack in the town of Dobley was a deliberate, precision airstrike on a building where the terrorist suspects were believed to be staying.
Witnesses say the missiles demolished a home and wounded several people. There are conflicting reports about whether anyone was killed.
Residents of Dobley say a senior Islamic cleric, Hassan Turki, was in town on Sunday to meet with other militants.
This is at least the third U.S. attack on targets in Somalia since the beginning of last year.
In January, 2007, a U.S. AC-130 gunship fired on Islamist militants in southern Somalia. In June, a U.S. Navy destroyer shelled suspected al-Qaida targets in Somalia’s Puntland region.
Witnesses report seeing an AC-130 above Dobley around the time of today’s attack. The AC-130 is a gunship that can deliver precision airstrikes or saturate an area with heavy gunfire.
Kremlin Candidate Wins Presidential Election (VOA): With all but half a percent of the ballots counted from Sunday’s presidential election in Russia, Kremlin candidate Dmitri Medvedev has garnered more than all of his opponents combined. Now, Medvedev is indicating how he will share power with outgoing President Validimir Putin, who is expected to become prime minister.
Putin served as prime minister under Boris Yeltsin before succeeding the late president.
Medvedev won more than 70 percent of the vote. Communist Party candidate candidate Gennady Zyuganov came in second with nearly 18%.
Potential opponents who might have been considered—including former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, human rights activist Vladimir Bukovsky, reformer Boris Nemtsov and former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov—were prohibited from running because of technalities.
Election chief Vladimir Churov says voter participation set a nationwide record with nearly 70%.
But Russia’s independent voter rights group, Golos, says the organization received numerous telephone calls on its hotline from teachers, factory workers, university professors and others complaining they were forced to cast ballots. The director of Golos, Lilia Shibanova, told VOA the source of the pressure probably comes from local, not Kremlin authorities.

Edwards won the rain-delayed race at Califonia Monday.
His stay atop the points stadings may be short-lived, though, because his car failed a post-race inspection that co;uld lead to severe penalties for his team. NASCAR officials discovered the lid was not on the oil tank box of his car and the parts are going back to North Carolina for further inspection.
Last month five Nationwide Series (former Busch Cup) crew chiefs were suspended for six races, fined $15,000 each and their drivers were docked 25 points apiece because their lids were simply loose.
Edwards pulled away from Dale Earnhardt, Jr., on a restart with five laps to go and kept the lead.
Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth were among the leaders but got tangled up with less than 10 laps to go when Gordon’s car drifted into Kenseth’s. Gordon’s car wound up colliding up with the inside wall.
South Bend’s Ryan Newman, the Daytona 500 winner, moved down to third place in the point standings with a 14th-place finish at Vegas.
