GOP Congressional Prospect Endorses Segregation (Quotes from WSBT.com): Republican 2d District congressional candidate Tony Zirkle has suggested that a new form of segregation might help society’s ills.
“No one’s calling for segregation as to what we saw in the past, where it was removing political power and oppressing the African-American community; that was wrong and that was criminal,” Zirkle told WSBT news.
In interviews with the South Bend Tribune and weekly Kokomo Perspective, Zirkle questioned whether desegregation has worked. He cited high out-of-wedlock birth rates and high crime rates to support his position.
He told WSBT News his plan would give blacks more political power.
“They would have six states, so instead of having one half-black senator, well they would have 12.” Zirkle said. “That’s a phenomenal increase in political power.
Incumbent 2d District Congressman Joe Donnelly, Republican candidates Luke Puckett and Joseph Roush, and St. Joseph County Republican Party Chairman Chris Riley were among those who condemned Zirkle’s remarks.
This is the party of Abraham Lincoln and when somebody runs as a Republican that means something,” Riley said. “There is a history and tradition to this party and these comments betray that history and tradition.”
Zirkle unsuccessfully challenged then incumbent GOP Congressman Chris Chocola in the 2006 Primary.
The Indiana primary is May 6 for Democratic and Republican voters.
Puckett, a Goshen businessman, has the official party backing. Roush, from Culver, announced his candidacy recently.

Carl Edwards Penalized 100 Points: Carl Edwards has taken another serious hit in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings.]
On Wednesday, NASCAR issued penalties and fines to the Roush Fenway No. 99 team a result of rule infractions found Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Edwards won the race, his second in a row this season, but violations were discovered during post-race inspection on March 2.
It was determined during the inspection that the lid on the oil reservoir encasement on Edwards’ car was off. NASCAR deemed that Edwards was guilty of actions detrimental to stock car racing; having a car, car parts, components and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules; and having any device or duct work that permits air to pass from one area of the interior of the car to another.
As a result, Edwards and car owner Jack Roush were penalized 100 championship driver and 100 championship owner points, respectively.
The penalty drops Edwards from first in the Sprint Cup standings to seventh as he goes from 491 points to 391.
In the event Edwards qualifies for the “Chase for the Championship,” he will not receive the 10 bonus points for the UAW-Dodge 400 victory that are used to determine the Chase seeding order.
Also, Edwards’ crew chief Bob Osborne was fined $100,000, suspended from the next six Sprint Cup races, suspended from NASCAR until April 30 and placed on probation until December 31.
