Uncle Ron's Sports Ramblings

Question: If Nets' ownership does iron out the problems and get their Brooklyn arena, would the team be called the Brooklyn Nets or would they change the name to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

A NASCAR Driver Named Tiffany (She'll have to change her name to "Terrible Tiff" or "The Tiffanator"): Tiffany Daniels, 23, and Kristin Bumbera, 21, are among two of the 25 entrants in NASCAR's "Drive for Diversity" program.

Eight of the entrants will get a one-year contract to drive in one of NASCAR's developmental series for the 2009 season.

Daniels, a brunette, has the same educational background as South Bend's Ryan Newman, the 2008 Dayton 500 winner. She majored in mechanical engineering and minored in public relations at UNC-Charlotte. She chose the school because it has a motorsports program.

Daniels is an assistant engineer on Juan Pablo Montoya's No. 42 car in the Sprint Cup series.

Bumbera, a blonde from Sealy, Texas, has two victories and 11 top-five finishes in 2008 in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Roseville, CA.

The ladies were wearing racing suits in the photos accompanying the articles, so one couldn't tell if they had Sarah Palin-like legs, but then they're trying to get into NASCAR not politics.

There are currently no females, no African-Americans, and one Hispanic in the racing in NASCAR's major series.

Michael Cherry, a 19-year-old African-American driver from Tampa, FL., is also hoping to be one of the eight picked from the program.

Chase Austin from Eudora, KA., raced in one
Busch (now Nationwide) race in 2007.

Willy T. Ribbs, Jr., competed in the Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) during the 1986 season and competed in two Indy 500's.

Wendell Scott, the first African-American to compete in the forerunner of the Sprint Cup series, competed in 495 races from 1961-73. He finished no worse than 10th in the final standings from 1966-69.

He was also the first African-American to win a top NASCAR event, taking the checkered flag at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, FL., on December 1, 1963.
