CFH Guest Shot at East Race: CFH guest Ron Miller was shot in the arm while sitting at the East Race yesterday.

Ron and one of two teenagers struggled over his bicycle; the 17-year-old pulled a .38 revolver and shot him, wounding him in the wrist.

“It doesn’t make any sense to us why someone would resort to that level of violence over a bicycle,” said South Bend Police Captain Phil Trent.

The teens—the alleged shooter and a 14-year-old--were arrested after a short chase and indentified by a witness. They left their bicycle and Ron’s.

Ron’s injuries were treated at the hospital and he was back at CFH the same night.

Woods had already missed part of the season after having an arthroscopic procedure two days after the Masters in April. He came back and won last weekend’s U.S. Open, but he was visibly wincing from the pain.

Tiger will undergo reconstructive surgery to the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. The recovery time for that type of surgery can be from six to eight months.

Tiger said in a news release on his web site that he ruptured the ligament last summer while running near his home in Florida after the British Open.

The release also said that had a double stress fracture of his left tibia.

Death Toll, Pessimism Rises in Zimbabwe: The pre-election death and injury toll continues to mount in Zimbabwe and observers are skeptical that the June 27 presidential run-off will be fair.

Four members of the Movement for Democratic Change were reportedly killed in a firebombing yesterday. That brings the toll since the March general election to approximately 70 killed and more than 1,000 wounded.

Morgan Tsvangirai—who outpolled incumbent Robert Mugabe in the general election 48%-43%--has been detained five times since then. The MDC number two, Tendai Biti, is under arrest on treason charges. Mugabe has threatened to arrest Tsvangirai.

The MDC has been denied the right to advertise in state-run media.

Observers are increasingly skeptical that the run-off will be fair.

Reports of Fraudulent Bank Withdrawals: Reports of fraudulent bank withdrawals have been flooding in to local police departments Monday and Tuesday.

A Teacher’s Credit Union spokesperson said about 150 of their 200,000 members reported money missing over the last 48 hours.

One bank customer reported his account went from a positive to a negative balance when someone at an ATM in Lagos, Nigeria withdrew $300 from it.

The accounts of theft varied from withdrawals of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The vast majority of them came from ATM’s or debit card transactions posted in Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine or Spain.

The list of financial institutions affected includes: Notre Dame Federal Credit Union, KeyBank, Teacher’s Credit Union, Michian’s Finest Bank, Elkhart County Farm Bureau Credit Union, E-Trade Financial, Chiphone Federal Credit Union.

Police aren’t sure yet how the banks’ security was breached.

Notre Dame Federal Credit Union is blocking transactions originating in Nigeria, Russia, or Ukraine and is taking steps to replace cards that may have been compromised.

The best way to protect yourself from fraud is by checking your accounts regularly, and calling your financial institution when you notice money is missing. You should follow up in writing by sending a certified letter, so you can prove when the institution received it. Be sure to keep a copy of the letter for your records.

By law, customers have 60 days from the date their bank account statement is sent to report any money taken from an account without permission.

Midwest League All-Star Game; West 5, East 4: South Bend’s Evan Frey and Mike Mee had one hit while Sean Coughlin was hitless in three at-bats.

Hawk pitchers Bryan Augenstein and Evan Scribner each faced and retired two batters.

The Hawks return to the Cove Thursday night to begin a four-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Game time is 7 p.m.

NBA Finals; Celtics 131, Lakers 92: Well, the Lakers can always say that at least they won championships in Minnesota—unlike Kevin Garnett—but that’s probably small consolation to the current group, most of whom likely never heard of George Mikan. Besides, Kevin Garnett is quite happy with the NBA championship he won with his new Boston teammates.

It was the Celtics 17th title and first in 22 years.

Garnett and Ray Allen—who was also a new addition to the team this season—scored 26 points apiece; Garnett also grabbed 14 rebounds. Paul Pierce, the finals MVP, added 17 despite playing with a sprained knee.

The 39-point margin surpassed the previous record set in game five of the 1965 NBA finals which featured the same two teams.

Regular season MVP Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 22 points.

The Celtic championship continues an in-credible year for Beantown and New England. The defending World Series champion Red Sox are in first place again, the Patriots came within a game of completing a perfect season, Boston College was ranked number one briefly in football and beat Notre Dame for the NCAA hockey championship. The Revolution (MLS) and Connecticut Sun (the closest WNBA team to Boston) are in first place in their divisions.

U. S. Open Golf; Tiger edges Rocco in Playoff: Rocco Mediate, 45, refused to concede to the world’s best golfer in the U.S. Open playoff at Torrey Pines yesterday, which was scheduled for 18 holes and wound up taking 19.

The winner, Tiger Woods, ignored doctors’ orders and risked permanent damaged to his surgically-repaired left knee to play in the Open.

Tiger took an early lead in the playoff and had a 2-stroke lead heading in to the back nine where he shot a 30 Friday but he couldn’t put it away. He made a bogey on the 12th while Mediate birdied the 14th and 15th to regain the lead. Tiger had to birdie the 18th hole—just like he did Sunday—to force sudden death.

Tiger made par on the number 7 hole in sudden death while Mediate bogeyed for the win.

It was Tiger’s 14th major win; it might have been Rocco’s last, best chance to win his first.

Tiger is now second behind Jack Nicklaus in major wins (18-14) and third behind Sam Snead (82) and Nicklaus (73) in total PGA wins.

NBA Finals; Lakers 103, Celtics 98: Paul Pierce put the Celtics on his back with a 38-point effort, but this time the visiting Celtics could not overcome an earlier deficit.

MVP Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 25 points, including a decisive dunk in the final minute.

Pau Gasol chipped in 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Kevin Garnett pulled down 14 rebounds to go with his 13 points for Boston.

Game six is Tuesday at Boston; tip-off is 9 p.m. on ABC (57).

U. S. Open Golf; Tiger and Rocco in Playoff: Tiger Woods’ streak of not losing a major when he goes in to final round with a lead is not over, but it is in jeopardy.

Rocco Mediate, who would be the oldest player to win a U.S. Open, will face Tiger in an 18-hole playoff today at Torrey Pines after the two finished tied at 72 with a 1-under 283 score.

Lee Westwood broke another precedent—the “Tiger factor.” No one playing in Tiger’s pairing at a major does well, but Westwood was able to stay in it until the 72d hole. If the Englishman had made his birdie putt there would be a three-way playoff for the Open championship.

Tiger had three eagles in the tournament and just missed a fourth. Mediate missed a couple of short putts on Sunday’s round that would have given him the championship.

Iowa Flood Waters Threaten Hospital: Rising flood waters have forced evacuation of a downtown hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The city is experiencing the worst flooding in its history and the water is still rising. The Cedar River was expected to rise another three feet by this morning, and reach a record crest of 12 feet higher than the previous mark, set in 1851.

With more rain predicted for this weekend, flood waters were expected to remain high for at least the next seven or eight days, according to a spokesman for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

Most of downtown Cedar Rapids—including City Hall, the county courthouse and jail—was underwater. About 8,000 people have evacuated their homes.

Iowa City is also being hit hard by the flooding because of water flowing out of the Coralville Reservoir. The city has been evacuated and attempts to preserve infrastructure will probably be abandoned.
