U. S. Open Golf; Tiger edges Rocco in Playoff: Rocco Mediate, 45, refused to concede to the world’s best golfer in the U.S. Open playoff at Torrey Pines yesterday, which was scheduled for 18 holes and wound up taking 19.

The winner, Tiger Woods, ignored doctors’ orders and risked permanent damaged to his surgically-repaired left knee to play in the Open.

Tiger took an early lead in the playoff and had a 2-stroke lead heading in to the back nine where he shot a 30 Friday but he couldn’t put it away. He made a bogey on the 12th while Mediate birdied the 14th and 15th to regain the lead. Tiger had to birdie the 18th hole—just like he did Sunday—to force sudden death.

Tiger made par on the number 7 hole in sudden death while Mediate bogeyed for the win.

It was Tiger’s 14th major win; it might have been Rocco’s last, best chance to win his first.

Tiger is now second behind Jack Nicklaus in major wins (18-14) and third behind Sam Snead (82) and Nicklaus (73) in total PGA wins.

Same-Sex Marriages Begin in California: Officials—including San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom—began performing marriages ce-remonies yesterday as a result of last month’s decision by the California Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage.

The ruling may be short-lived as California voters will decide a ballot measure in November that would effectively overturn the court’s decision by defining marriage as “between a man and a woman.”

Russert Memorial on MSNBC: MSNBC will televise the Wednesday memorial service for Tim Russert who collapsed and died Friday while preparing to host “Meet the Press.”
