Mars Lander Finds Ice: The NASA Phoenix Mars has reportedly found dice-sized ice crumbs that may have melted after being uncovered more than dour days ago. As Phoenix dug around and took images of the Martian soil, scientists noticed several small cubes that vanished over a span of several days.

The possible ice was found in a small trench which was made larger by a robotic arm on Phoenix.

Zimbabwe Security Members Forced to Vote for Mugabe: Members of Zimbabwe’s police force, military, and prison service—100,000 in all—are being forced to vote for President Robert Mugabe ahead of the June 27 presidential run-off.

Senior department officials supervised police officer voting in Harare Wednesday. Officers were forced to mark their postal ballots in front of the supervisors before they placed them into envelopes.

Morgan Tsvangirai, who outpolled Mugabe 48%-43% in the general election, rejected advice to pull out of the run-off and vowed to press ahead with his campaign. Under Zimbabwean law, a presidential candidate must get at least 50% of the vote.

Mugabe’s supporters have carried out acts of intimidation—including murder—and the government has thrown obstacles in the way of Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Police have barred MDC campaign rallies and Tsvangirai has been detained five times.

Tsvangirai’s number two, Tendai Biti, was arrested June 12 following a long stay in South Africa. He was formally charged with treason yesterday—a capital offense.

Mugabe has said that he is ready to fight to keep the opposition from coming to power.
