VA Hospital Van: To schedule a ride to the VA Hospital in Ft. Wayne, St. Joseph County veterans can call Doug Davis (USMC, retired) at (574) 243-VETS (8387) The van service also provides connecting rides to the VA hospitals in Marion and Indianapolis.

Homeless Veterans: If you are disabled and cannot work full-time (or are over 65), you may be entitled to a disability pension from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

▪ABE Incentives: Students will be given a card to be initialed during each walk-in class attended. Once a student has attended 10 walk-in programs, cards can be redeemed for prizes.

▪GED Essay Writing Class: Are you working on your GED? Do you need to write an essay or refine your writing skills? Then join us for the Essay Class, Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m.

▪Submit Your Poem: If you like to write poetry in your free time, this is your chance to be a published author! Submit a poem to any staff member in the ABE room and it may be published in the next ABE Newsletter. Also, we will hopefully start another Poetry Jam in the Fall; let us know if you are interested

The Write Stuff: Are you the only person who can read your handwriting? Come join us on Tuesday afternoons from 2-3 p.m. to learn writing that will look great on job applications, love letters, and everything else. Class starts May 6. Sign up in ABE.

▪Writing: Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m., ABE. Improve your basic writing skills under the guidance of a trained instructor.

▪Creative Writing: Starts June 12. Thursdays, 6-7 p.m.; open to everyone.

Soriano Out Six Weeks: Cubs outfielder and lead-off hitter Alfonso Soriano could miss six weeks with a broken in his left hand after he was hit by a Jeff Bennett pitch in a game last night against Atlanta.

A team spokesman said Soriano will be in a splint for three weeks. He was on the DL earlier this season with a calf injury. The Cubs were 9-5 during his absence. After a slow start, he hit seven homers in one six-game stretch.

The Cubs have the best record in baseball so far this season.

Equity Firm Takes Control of Petty Enterprises: Equity firm Boston Ventures has taken control of Petty Enterprises and the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Barry Baker, managing director of Boston Ventures, becomes Petty’s new chairman, and former video game producer David Zucker takes over as CEO.

Richard Petty says he’ll still have a large day-to-day role with the team his family has run since 1949.

Tornado Hits Scout Camp: Four people were killed and 48 injured when a tornado hit the Little Sioux Scout Ranch, about 40 miles north of Omaha last night.

The names and ages of those killed were not immediately made public, and it was not clear whether those killed were Boy Scouts, or whether they were children or adults.

The scouts, ages 13-18, were participating in a leadership training course at the camp. There were 93 campers and 25 staff members at the 1,800-acre camp.

Tornadoes also touched down in Kansas, Minnesota and Nebraska last night, according to the Associated Press. Those tornadoes killed at least two people in northern Kansas, destroyed much of the small town of Chapman, and caused extensive damage on the Kansas State University campus.

Zimbabwe Arrests Opposition Leader: Zimbabwe police arrested Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Secretary-General Tendai Biti as he arrived at the airport in Harari from South Africa.

Biti was getting ready to campaign for the June 27 presidential run-off election.

The MDC outpolled President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF, 48%-43% in the general election. According to Zimbabwean law, a presidential candidate has to have over 50% to win.

Police have also detained MDC presidential candidate Morgan Tsvangirai twice since the general election.
