Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, reached the summit of Everest on June 2, 1953, as part of a British-led expedition. Fifteen previous attempts to climb the mountain had ended in failure. He was knighted by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in July, 1953.
His native New Zealand is planning a state funeral for the explorer.
