Zimbabwe Opposition Retains Slight Lead in Parliamentary Elections (VOA): Zimbabwe’s main opposition party remained in the lead early today over President Robert Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party—with more than half of Saturday’s parliamentary election results declared.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission says the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and its breakaway faction have so far won 56 of the 210 parliamentary seats. The ZANU-PF party is trailing with 53 seats.

No results from the presidential election are available, three days after the end of voting, fueling fears of vote-rigging.

The United States has expressed concern with the delay in election results, and has urged the election commission to publish them as quickly as possible.

Seven European foreign ministers (from France, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Great Britain) have also expressed concern about the situation and have called for a swift announcement of all official election results, especially the results of the presidential vote.

Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since it gained independence in 1980. He was opposed in the election by Morgan Tsvangirai and independent candidate Simba Makoni, a former Mugabe ally who broke with the ruling party.
