It was the eighth championship for Volunteers’ coach Pat Summitt, putting her two behind retired UCLA coach John Wooden.

Tennessee also avenged one of their two losses. Stanford won an earlier meeting at the Cardinal’ home court, 73-69 in overtime.

Stanford’s Candice Wiggins, who had been averaging 27.4 points-per-game during the tournament, was held to 14 in the final.

Parker is leaving early for the pros. She and Wiggins are both expected to go high in the WNBA draft.

Newman, Penske Penalized: South Bend’s Ryan Newman and Penske Racing South were each penalized 25 points after their number 12 Dodge failed an inspection following Sunday’s NASCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Pelley Conviction Overturned: Jeff Pelley, formerly of Lakeville, had his murder conviction overturned by the Indiana Court of Appeals Tuesday.

Pelley had been sentenced to 160 years for the murders of his father, stepmother, and two stepsisters in 1989.

The bodies were found in the parsonage of the Olive Branch Church on Osborne Road south of Lakeville, where Pelley’s father was pastor.

The Indiana Supreme Court has 30 days to review the case. They can uphold the appeals court decision or order a new trial.

Top Iraq Officials Testify Before Congress: Army General David Petraeus asked Congress for a halt to U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq this summer.

Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq, said “Withdrawing too many forces too quickly could jeopardize the progress of the past year. We have the forces that we need right now, I believe. We’ve got to continue. We have our teeth into the jugular, and we need to keep it there.”

U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker, the top American official in Iraq, also testified.

Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, used one hearing to criticize what he called the “reckless and irresponsible withdrawal” plans of his Democratic rivals, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Clinton responded by saying that it would be irresponsible to perpetuate “the same failed policy.” Obama called again for a withdrawal timetable, saying the United States may have to accept “a messy, sloppy status quo” as long as there are not “huge outbreaks of violence.”
