Nation/World

North Koreans Taped at Syrian Nuclear Site (VOA): U.S. intelligence officials will meet with congressional lawmakers about North Korea’s alleged nuclear cooperation with Syria Thursday on Capitol Hill.

High-ranking U.S. officials are telling reporters the lawmakers will be shown video of North Koreans working at a suspected nuclear reactor site in Syria. The video also reportedly shows the reactor’s design was identical to the North Korean reactor at Yongbyon.

The suspected reactor site was destroyed by Israeli warplanes last September. Damascus protested the air raid, accusing Israel of aggression. Both Syria and North Korea have denied the allegation.

The briefings are taking place as the Bush administration is trying to reach a deal with Pyongyang to end its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea agreed with Washington and four other nations (South Korea, Russia, Japan and China) to scrap its nuclear weapons program.

The isolated nation was supposed to make a full disclosure of its activities as part of the deal last December, but the U.S. says the list was incomplete.

Zimbabwe’s Opposition Dismisses Call for Mugabe to Head Transitional Government (VOA): Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has described as “rubbish” demands by supporters that incumbent President Robert Mugabe lead a transitional government to end the deadlock while new elections are organized. The MDC says the call by supporters of the ruling ZANU-PF party is an affront to democratic tenets after the failure of the electoral commission to release presidential results three weeks after the general elections.

Partisans of ZANU-PF—which has held power in Zimbabwe since the country formerly known as Rhodesia gained independence from Britain 28 years ago—said there was need for the post-election impasse to be solved.

The MDC retained its parliamentary victory in one of the 23 constituencies being recounted. ZANU-PF could still overturn the MDC victory in the 22 remaining districts. The recount is scheduled to last through this weekend.

Weapons Shipment Forced to Turn Around: A shipment of weapons for Zimbabwe’s embattled government was forced to return to China after no neighboring seaport would unload it. Zimbabwe is landlocked.

The shipment included mortar grenades and bullets.
