Nation/World

Kenyan Prime Minister, Cabinet Sworn In: Raila Odinga was sworn in as Kenya’s first prime minister today along with 40 new cabinet ministers.

Odinga was given the newly-created position in a compromise after narrowly losing the presidency to Mwai Kibaki. The disputed election was followed by violence that claimed more than 1,000 lives.

The cabinet is the largest in Kenya’s history. It contains 20 members each from Kibaki’s and Odinga’s parties.

Odinga is the first cousin of Barack Obama, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Obama’s father was born in Kenya.

Pope Speaks to DC Crowd: Pope Benedict VI said his first Mass on American soil to a standing-room-only crowd at the newly opened Nationals Park baseball stadium in Washington, D.C., this morning.

The Pope apologized once more for the church’s priest sex abuse scandal.

“NO words of mine could describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse,” he said. “Yesterday, I spoke with the bishops about this. Today, I encourage each of you to do what you can to foster healing and reconciliation, and to assist those who have been hurt.”

The hope was to serve communion to the entire stadium in about 20 minutes, using 300 ministers. The Pope was accompanied by 14 cardinals, 250 bishops and 1,300 priests.

Clinton Dwells on Obama’s Past (L.A. Times): The Democratic candidates for president debated forcefully Wednesday over who would prove more electable in November, with Hillary Clinton repeatedly raising questions about Barack Obama’s past associations and Obama contending that her approach typified the blowtorch political style that Americans decry.

Obama, the Illinois senator, was thrown on the defensive for the first half of the nearly two-hour debate. The moderators, ABE News anchors Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, pressed him on his recent comments about “bitter” small-town Pennsylvanians; his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.; his acquaintance with a long-ago member of the Weather Underground group; and the absence of an American flag in his lapel—though no one else on stage wore one.

Obama noted that Clinton’s husband had pardoned associates of the Weather Underground in the closing days of his tenure as president, and sought to turn Clinton’s barbs into proof that he, in November, would be able to “take a punch.”

Clinton needed a strong showing in the debate. Polls show that her once substantial lead in Pennsylvania has dwindled to 5%.
